Classification news for Tennessee teams

The TSSAA has announced the breakdown for the new classification period that will run from 2017-2021. They have done it for numerous sports and for both public and private classes but we will just deal with football. This is not set in stone as schools have the choice to move up a class by noon on Tuesday, October 25. After that point, TSSAA will set the districts.

As of right now, there are 50 schools in 1A & 2A and 49 schools in 3A through 6A.

1A schools will be 0-375.
Those schools are KIPP, Freedom Prep, Middle College, Hillcrest, Westwood, BTW & Oakhaven.

2A schools will be 376-556.
Those schools are Fairley, MAHS, Manassas, Douglass, East, Mitchell & Hamilton.

3A schools will be 557-821.
Those schools are Melrose, Trezevant, Raleigh Egypt, MLK Prep, Sheffield, Wooddale & Covington.

4A schools will be 822-1102.
Those schools are Fayette Ware, Craigmont, Millington & Kirby.

5A schools will be 1103-1508.
Those schools are Ridgeway, Overton, Munford, Kingsbury, Bolton, Brighton & Southwind.

6A schools will be 1509 and up.
Those schools are Central, Whitehaven, Houston, Germantown, Arlington, White Station, Cordova, Collierville & Bartlett.

There is no guarantee that Covington or Fayette Ware will be placed in the district with the Memphis teams as they are now. Covington is the largest school listed in 3A. If they choose to play up, don't be surprised if Ripley and Haywood Co also get moved into that district with Fayette Ware, Craigmont, Millington and Kirby. The reasoning behind that is simple. There are 11 teams (including Fayette Ware, Ripley & Haywood Co) in what would be the next closest district in 4A. I believe they would look to balance that out and by adding those three schools, the TSSAA could do so.

As of right now, there are 16 schools in D2A, 21 in D2AA & 9 in D2AAA.

D2AAA (530 & up)
