Game Preview: Whitehaven at East St. Louis

In 2011, the Whitehaven Tigers celebrated Labor Day weekend with a win over a nationally ranked opponent nearly 300 miles away from their Elvis Presley Boulevard home. On Sunday they will look to continue the tradition when they travel back to East St. Louis for the City of Champions Classic.  The game against national power East St. Louis High School will be the highlight in the 4 game event.

The East St. Louis Flyers are a favorite to win the state championship in Illinois’ highest classification.  They return 8 starters on offense, and 8 starters on defense.  The Flyers are anchored by 6’, 200 lb running back Natereance Strong, who last season ran for over 750 yards and scored 7 touchdowns, as a freshman.  He was named to the MaxPrep Freshman All-American Team.

Dana Payne Memorial Fund

As you know very well by now, Millington football player Dana Payne passed away Tuesday afternoon during practice.  The Commercial Appeal's John Varlas wrote a very good piece about the situation and family.

A memorial fund has been set up in Dana Paynes name.  Donations can be made to any First Tennessee Bank or First South Credit Union location.

After meeting with Dana's family, Millington has decided to play their season opener this Friday at Kirby.

Tragedy in Millington

The Millington Central High School family is coming to grips with a tragedy that happened on the football field.   Dana Payne, a sophomore at Millington, died during practice this afternoon.  He was rushed to Le Bonheur after CPR was performed on the field.  Millington was preparing for this Friday's upcoming game at Kirby.

This is the second major adversity the Millington football community has had to endure in the past 15 years.  In 1997, sophomore Mario Reed was paralyzed during a home football game against Houston.

Our thought and prayers and with the Payne family, and the Millington community.

Drew Reed threw for 244 yds and 3 TD as the Tigers defeated the Patriots 31-28. The game was tied at 14 less than a minute before halftime when Reed's pass was intercepted by Oakland's Tyson Cope and returned 100 yds for a TD. The Tigers made the most of their opportunities in the second half outscoring the Patriots 17-7. Tiger WR Justin Boring caught 10 passes for 89 yds and a TD. Travon Willis led Oakland with 107 yds rushing and 3 TD's. Next up for Arlington is White Station.

MUS Helmet Play: What's the Rule?

MUS running back Shane Tucker was just a few strides away from capping off a 21 point comeback against Nashville Ensworth Friday night when the play was abruptly whistled dead.  While breaking a tackle, Tucker's helmet came off.  With nothing between Tucker and the endzone but grass, the referee stopped the play due to a rule the NHSF installed to curve concussions.  Chris Evans, from MyPrimaryFocus, caught the action on camera in a series of photos.  The rule, 4.4.2, vaguely explains that if the ball carrier's helmet comes off during a play, that it is immediately ruled dead, and the ball is placed at the spot where the helmet came off. While the rule was probably instated with good intentions, strict compliance with it may not be practical.  Rules that are put in place to protect high school football player's safety are completely necessary, but in this case Tucker was not in danger.  The rule overstepped its intention and greatly effected the outcome of a game.
