Game Preview: MUS at Fayetteville

Thursday night, Memphis University School will travel over 300 miles to play the defending 7A Arkansas State Champions.  It will be MUS’s second game this season (of three) against a defending state champion.  The game, against Fayetteville High School, will be played at Razorback Stadium two nights before the University of Arkansas opens its season on the same field.   The game will be a part of Hootens.com Kickoff Week.
MUS is coming off a week where it cruised over Kingsbury 55-6 (including scoring 41 points in the first quarter), but 2 weeks removed from a 35-28 loss at defending Tennessee State Champion Nashville Ensworth.    Quarterback Jordan Rodgers has gotten off to a great start throwing for 489 yards and 7 touchdowns in those 2 games.

Fayetteville is the defending state champion in Arkansas’ largest classification, which was their 2nd title in 5 years.   They are the top ranked Hooten.com team in 7A.  They return 3 players that have committed to the University of Arkansas:  Quarterback Austin Allen, Defensive Back Alex Brignoni and Linebacker Brook Ellis.  This is their opening game and their first game since defeating then nationally ranked Bentonville 29-28 in overtime to win the state championship.  The win over Bentonville avenged a 41-6 home loss earlier in the season and a loss in the previous year’s state championship game.

Notes:

  • There will be plenty of rings in the stadium, as these teams have a combined 6 State Championships in 8 years.
  • The two teams meet 2 years ago in a 7-on7 tournament in Hoover, AL.
  • MUS Running back Shane Tucker has received some interest by Arkansas State.
  • In two weeks, MUS will host defending Mississippi State Champion Olive Branch.
