Game recaps from October 3, 4 and 5

South Panola 40 Olive Branch 21

One of the high profile matches on the night was down in Batesville for this annual battle. South Panola jumped out to an early 20-0 lead before the Conquistadors cut the lead to 6 following Kyky Austin's 63 yd interception return for a touchdown. Austin also picked up a blocked field goal later in the game and returned it 78 yds for a score. Olive Branch QB Ross Trail left the game in an ambulance after taking a hit in the back. According to John Varlas from the CA (follow him on Twitter @johnvarlas), the x-rays were negative and Trail is moving around pretty good and day to day. Mississippi commitment Alfred Dickens who also left the game with an injury at the end of the first half and did not return, suffered from bruised ribs and dehydration. He is also day to day.

Sacred Heart Griffin (IL) 49 Whitehaven 27

The Tigers went to Springfield, Illinois to play the #5 team in the state and one with a pretty good track record of success. Multiple state championships and runner ups for the Cyclones assured Whitehaven that this would not be an easy task and it wasn't. SHG jumped out to a early lead but the Tigers had cut the lead to 26-20 at the half before faltering in the second half. Three things stand out from this game: 1) Whitehaven only had 2 yds rushing. They may have trailed and circumstances dictated that they throw the ball more but when is the last time you heard of a Whitehaven team with only 2 yds rushing? 2) SHG had 558 yds of offense. They have a WR, Malik Turner, that is headed to Illinois and is the real deal. The Tigers have faced plenty of "real deals" before though. This is the second game in a row that they have given up at least 40 points. 3) Whitehaven had 17 penalties for 126 yds. Multiple pass interference penalties. You are never going to get all the calls when you go on the road but you can't win many games with that many penalties. With all of that being said, Whitehaven's last 3 losses have come to the current #5 team in the state in Illinois, in 2011 in the state title game to Maryville and in 2010 in the state semifinals to Smyrna. That's a pretty good run and I am sure the Tigers will regroup following the bye week. QB Jordan Williams continued his stellar play with 3 more TD's (2 rushing, 1 passing) and was 19-29 for 206 yds. Williams has accounted for 10 touchdowns over the last 2 games. SR Duane Willingham caught 8 passes for 71 yds and SR Ramadi Warren caught 8 for 62 yds. SR Stevorius Kimball returned a kickoff 87 yds for a touchdown.

MUS 45 CBHS 9

Dominant. That one word sums it all up for the MUS defense for this game. They held one of the area's leading rushers, CBHS RB Connor Harris to just 39 yds. They forced 5 turnovers. They had 5 sacks and 11 tackles for lost yardage. They were pretty good on the offensive side of the ball too. JR RB Colton Neel was already the leading scorer in the Shelby Metro area with 14 touchdowns and added to that by scoring 2 more and rushing for 170 yds. The SR QB combination of James Sexton & Blake Bennett continue to be very effficient and productive. Sexton was 8-9 for 75 yds and a TD while Bennett was 4-6 for 94 yds and 2 TD's. Together they were 12-15 for 169 yds and 3 TD's. That's pretty good. SR WR Devin Perry caught 7 of those for 99 yds and a score.

Trezevant 22 Craigmont 6

The top two defensive teams in the area faced off for first place in District 16-AA. Both teams had allowed just 37 points all year long-Trezevant in 6 games, Craigmont in 5. The two teams were 1 and 2 vs the run-Trezevant (5 yds/gm) and Craigmont (60 yds/gm). Craigmont was 2nd vs the pass (54.6) and Trezevant was 7th (70.5) Total yds Trezevant was 1 and Craigmont was 2. When it was all said and done, the top team in most of those defensive categories came away with the win. Trezevant led 8-6 after 3 and put the game away with 2 touchdowns in the final quarter. JR LB Nicholas Clay led the way for a Bears' defense that had 5 sacks in the game with 7 tackles and a fumble recovery. JR RB Jamal Jones had 17 carries for 121 yds and JR QB Jordan Spencer only completed 2 passes all night but both went for TD's.

Millington 43 Kingsbury 8

It's not too often that a player returns a kickoff for a touchdown in a game. It definitely isn't too often that the same player intercepts a pass and returns it for a touchdown in that same game. So it would have to be extremely rare when that same person also returns a punt for a touchdown in the same game. Millington's Earl King had a night for the ages in the win vs the Falcons. King returned the opening kickoff 83 yds for a score. He opened the scoring in the third quarter with a 46 yd interception return for a TD and he finished the scoring for the game with a 59 yd punt return for a touchdown.

ECS 35 FACS 0

6-0 vs 5-0 with first place in the district on the line. The ECS Eagles came out firing on all cylinders as they try to return to the state title game. All the points in this one were scored in the first half and Cole Heotis led the charge. Heotis had 3 TD's in the game (2 rushing, 1 receiving) and finished with 148 yds of total offense (86 rushing on just 10 carries, 4 catches for 62 yds) while QB Preston Parrish threw for 181 yds and 2 TD's. The ECS defense was dominant in this one hold the area's leading rusher, Kortney Morris to 68 yds on 19 carries and held the Crusaders to 70 yds of total offense for the game.

Southaven 48 Hernando 20

The Chargers got back on the winning track and there were contributions for plenty of players. Southaven had almost 500 yds of total offense in the game and as usual, QB Shea Chism led the way. Chism finished 31-49 for 312 yds and 4 TD's. WR Ricky May caught two of those touchdowns to go along with his 8 catches for 89 yds and WR Terrence Davis caught 9 balls for 110 yds and a TD. Davis also returned a punt 62 yds for a score. RB Tedrick Wiggins had 122 yds on just 10 carries and a 75 yd TD. Hernando RB Leon Cunningham continued his outstanding play on the year with 128 yds rushing on just 5 carries and a TD.

White Station 38 Overton 35

The Spartans came roaring back to get the win behind QB Cedric Wilson and TE Grant Lewis. They connected on a TD pass and each scored a rushing TD in a 21 point third quarter to retake the lead. Wilson also threw another TD pass in the game and finished with 98 yds rushing on 16 carries and 10-16 passing for 118 yds. Lewis had 4 catches for 56 yds in addition to the touchdown. RB Kjay Johnson had the game winning touchdown in the fourth quarter and finished with 95 yds rushing on 19 carries. Overton SR QB Lindsey Williams did all he could to give his team a chance to win. Williams threw for 171 yds and rushed for 3 TD's as well. SR Kenneth Williams also returned a kickoff 93 yds for a TD. JR WR Damon Ross had 2 catches for 103 yds for the Wolverines.

Ridgeway 40 Germantown 21

The Roadrunners scored the exact amount of the points for the second week in a row. However, this time their defense was able to shut down its opponent and get the win. Ridgeway picked off 3 passes in the game with the last one coming in the 4th quarter. SR Josh Lyons stepped in front of a pass and returned it 43 yds for the score. JR RB Earl Harrison continues to be one of the area's leading running backs as he had 119 yds on just 20 carries and 3 TD's. Germantown SR RB Anthony Quinn led the way with 138 yds on 18 carries.

West Memphis Christian 54 Tunica Academy 18

The Black Knights exploded for 33 points in the first quarter and never looked back. SO QB Trevor Pagan continues his breakout season by going 10-15 for 279 yds and 3 TD's. SR WR Ricky Patterson caught 4 passes in the game for 125 yds and 2 of those TD's. SR RB Eric Clay had only 7 carries in the game but finished with 123 yds and 2 TD's. JR Tyler Baker scored 2 TD's in addition to catching 2 passes for 83 yds. SR WR Keari Brown had 2 catches for 51 yds and returned a fumble 52 yds for a TD.

East 35 Melrose 26

An old fashioned shootout over in Orange Mound went the way of the Mustangs but it wasn't easy. East led 21-20 after three before getting 2 fourth quarter scores to put the game away. It was the combination of "Thunder" and "Lightning" that led East to the win. "Thunder" aka Roderick Fields (5'9, 254) had 77 yds rushing in the game on 10 carries and scored 3 TD's. "Lightning" aka DeVante Turner (5'8, 160) had 234 yds rushing on 25 carries and 2 TD's. Melrose SR QB LeEarl Patterson did all he could to give his team a chance. Patterson came into the game with the most TD passes in the Shelby Metro area (17) and he did not disappoint on this night. Patterson was 14-23 for 240 yds and 4 TD's. SR Cornelius Sturghill caught 5 passes for 117 yds and was the target on three of those TD passes. SR Jonathan Johnson caught the 4th TD pass to go along with 5 total catches for 83 yds. FR WR KeAndrae Smith caught 7 passes for 90 yds for the Golden Wildcats.

Collierville 43 Kirby 21

The Dragons came out of their off week with a dominating defensive performance vs the Cougars en route to their 4th straight win. Collierville did not allow Kirby to cross its own 40 yd line until there were 4 and half minutes remaining in the game. JR QB Alex Hicks finished 13-27 for 216 yds and 3 TD's. WR Drew Van De Vuurst caught 4 passes for 71 yds and 2 TD's.

Covington 21 Liberty 13

A rematch of last year's 4A semifinal game ended the same way as its predecessor with a win for the Chargers. Liberty actually led 13-7 in the third before the Covington ground game put the game away. The Chargers rushed for 345 yds in the game and Aaron Foster's TD gave them a lead they would not surrender. Foster finished with 146 yds on 24 carries on the night but it was DaiQuon Norfolk that powered the attack. Norfolk had 207 yds on 15 carries and 2 TD's including a 95 yd run to open the scoring for the Chargers.

Harding Academy 35 Northpoint Christian 10

The Lions broke open a tie game at the half with some big plays to get their first district win of the year. SR QB Jackson Ward had 2 TD's in the third quarter for Harding Academy. That second touchdown was a 73 yd pass to SR WR Braden Shelby. In the fourth quarter, FR RAB Calvin Austin rushed for a 46 yd TD. Austin had only 2 carries on the night but finished with 80 yds rushing. JR RB Carliss Settles led the way on the ground for the Lions with 123 yds on 20 carries and had 2 TD's. Porter had 264 yds rushing on 28 carries and a TD. JR Austin Kellon had 3 TD's for the Panthers.

Lake Cormorant 27 Lewisburg 21

You have seen it time and time again. It's the last play of the game and a team takes a shot downfield, hoping to score to avoid going to overtime. It rarely ever works but when it does, there is euphoria for the winning team and great sadness for the losing team. Gators JR QB Bailey Walker hit SR WR Brandon Wright with a 71 yd TD pass on the final play of the game to give his team the win. Walker accounted for 3 of the 4 TD's on the night (2 passing, 1 rushing) and was 14-23 passing for 206 yds. Golden caught 4 passes on the night for 117 yds. The Patriots had over 400 yds of total offense and were led by QB Jake Harville. Harville had 148 yds rushing on 26 carries and 2 TD's and threw for 121 yds as well.

Mitchell 63 Oakhaven 0

Any questions concerning the Tigers and whether or not they would be rusty following their off week were quickly put to rest. Mitchell led 21-0 after 1 and 49-0 at the half to win going away. They were led by JR QB Tomadreus Trezevant and SR WR Dejuan McQuarters. Trezevant was almost perfect on the night, finishing 11-13 passing for 142 yds and 3 TD's and rushed for a TD as well. All of those touchdowns went to McQuarters who added a fourth TD on a 35 yd punt return. McQuarters caught 7 passes for 107 yds on the night. JR RB Randy Browley had 2 TD's rushing for the Tigers.

Briarcrest 35 St. Benedict 12

The Saints led 14-12 in the third quarter before putting the game away behind the arm of JR QB Ben Ellis. SO RB Colton Cochran led St. Benedict with 118 yds rushing on 10 carries and a TD.

DeSoto Central 27 Horn Lake 24

SO RB Alan Lamar has been getting the job done out of the backfield this year. It's usually been with his legs but it was his arm that did the trick in this game and the Jaguars are victorious because of it. Lamar threw a 4 yd TD pass to Grant Jackson for the game winner. He also rushed for a TD and had 86 yds rushing in the game. SO QB Cameron Bowman was 15-23 passing for 153 yds and a TD for the Jaguars. WR Stephen Bradley caught 7 passes for 74 yds. Horn Lake had over 400 yds of total offense and outgained the Jags by a 2 to 1 margin but could not get them in the one category that matters most. Horn Lake RB Malik Hawkins had 9 carries for 113 yds. QB Dalton Minton had 122 yds passing and a TD for the Eagles.

USJ 52 Tipton Rosemark 14

The Rebels responded from an early 21-0 hole with 2 straight touchdowns but could not stop the Bruins after that. SR QB Austin Chambers hit JR WR Logan Stewart with a 58 yd TD pass and SR DB Collin McCain picked off a pass and returned it 20 yds for the score but the Rebels could not get any closer.

Frayser 19 Raleigh Egypt 14

The Rams raced out to a 19-0 lead in the first half and had to hold on for the win. Frayser JR LB Raheem Forest had the big play on defense scooping up a fumble and returning it 77 yds for the score. Raleigh Egypt SR QB Martavious McNary had both touchdowns for the Pharoahs.

JR QB Deddrick Thomas had 4 touchdowns on the night, giving him 12 on the year.

New Hope 28 Center Hill 24

The Mustangs come up just a big short in this one but SO QB Dan Ellington continues his stellar play. Ellington had over 200 yds of total offense with 3 TD's last week in the OT loss to Lewisburg.
