Game recaps from October 17-18

Arlington 38 Millington 37

Add this one to the list for candidates for game of the year as it had many twists and turns and was finally settled on special teams. Millington SR RB Lakeron Garcia had just scored his third TD of the night with 23 seconds left to bring the Trojans to within one but Arlington JR LB Hunter Clay broke through to block the ensuing extra point and give the Tigers the win. Just 5 and a half minutes earlier, Garcia's second TD of the night had tied the game and Arlington JR RB Joseph Stevenson returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yds for the then go ahead score. The Tigers scored two touchdowns in 1:04 late in the first half to take the lead. After SR QB Hunter Sheffield scored on a 1 yd run to tie the game, the Trojans lost the ball on the kickoff & Sheffield took advantage, hitting SR WR Tyler Flack with his second TD of the game. Arlington led 24-17 after 3 so there were 34 points combined by the two teams in the 4th quarter.  Sheffield finished 18-27 for 230 yds and 2 TD's. SO WR Everett Mitchell was his favorite target with 10 catches for 93 yds and Flack finished with 5 catches for 100 yds in addition to the 2 TD's. JR Ben Evans led the way on defense with 10 tackles. For the Trojans, Garcia had 59 yds rushing to go with the 3 TD's and caught 4 passes for 47 yds. SO QB Eldon Tyms was 17-26 for 255 yds and 2 TD's. Both of those went to JR WR Damarius Curry who caught 5 passes overall for 141 yds and also had 6 tackles on defense. SR Delvin Williamson had 5 tackles and 3 sacks for Millington as well.

East 13 Whitehaven 10

When East JR RB Roderick Fields scored on a 1 yd run for the Mustangs in the second quarter, you probably wouldn't have found anyone in attendance that would have bet you that it would be the last points of the game. But that's what happened down at the Fairgrounds and the East defense was a big reason why. Whitehaven was held to just 19 yds rushing and 118 yds overall and the Mustangs forced 5 turnovers and knocked Whitehaven QB Jordan Williams out of the game. SO RB DeVante Turner continues his outstanding play with a 75 yd TD run. It could have been a lot worse. East had 3 touchdowns called back due to penalty. It's the first time that Whitehaven has lost back to back games since 2006 and the first time they have lost to an area team since 2010.

Lewisburg 44 Clarksdale 40

The Patriots trailed 34-17 heading into the final quarter and rallied for the victory behind SO QB Jake Harville. Harville was 24-45 for 301 yds and 6 TD's to lead his team to the win. His favorite targets were juniors Tucker Wammack and and Colton Freeman. Wammack caught 8 passes for 140 yds and 3 TD's while Freeman also caught 8 passes for 79 yds and 2 TD's.

Melrose 54 Hamilton 14

En fuego. That's all you have to say about the Golden Wildcats offense the last couple of weeks and they were up to their old tricks Friday night at Crump. SR QB LeEarl Patterson threw for 320 yds on 14 of 21 passing and 6 TD's and it's no surprise that his two favorite targets were SR Cornelius Sturghill and JR Johnathan Johnson. Patterson and Sturghill have been the QB-WR connection in the Shelby Metro area. Sturghill caught 6 passes for 117 yds and 3 TD's. Over the last 3 weeks, they have combined for 13 times for 389 yds and 8 TD's. Johnson was just as spectacular on the night. He caught 6 passes for 169 yds and 2 TD's. He has 17 catches for 349 yds and 3 TD's over the last 3 games. On the year, Patterson has 29 TD passes and Sturghill has caught 14 of those and Johnson has 9. SO QB Jonathan Robinson had both touchdowns (1 rushing, 1 passing) for Hamilton

ECS 47 Northpoint Christian 0

When you have a balanced offense, it is extremely tough for the opposing defense to stop you. The ECS offense was perfectly balanced on Friday night to remain the only unbeaten team left in the area. The Eagles had 237 yds rushing and 237 yds passing and after a scoreless first quarter, they put the Trojans away with a 26 point second quarter. SR QB Preston Parrish was 15-22 passing for 156 yds and 2 TD's and added one on the ground while SO RB Drew Croegart had 2 touchdowns rushing as well.

MUS 45 St. Benedict 16

You have to pick your poison when playing the Owls. Try to stop JR RB Colton Neel or SR Devin Perry. When they are both clicking, it's going to be a long night. It was a very long night for the Eagles as both Neel and Perry were very productive. Neel had 90 yds rushing on just 11 carries and 3 more touchdowns, He leads the Shelby Metro area in rushing touchdowns (18) and total touchdowns (19). He is averaging a TD every 6 times he touches the ball in the ground game. Perry caught 5 passes for 98 yds and TD passes from James Sexton and Blake Bennett. Perry has 32 catches on the year and is averaging over 17 yds per catch with 8 TD's. The Owls defense is pretty good too. They forced 7 turnovers (5 interceptions, 2 fumbles) in the game. St. Benedict JR QB Mark Kovacs was 15-30 for 190 yds and 2 TD's both of which went to JR WR Joey Magnifico. JR WR Tyler Currie had 7 catches for 84 yds for the Eagles as well.

Olive Branch 37 Horn Lake 14

It's always good to get a big play early in the game to kickstart things and lately it's been the same guy that has been getting it done for the Conquistadors. JR KyKy Austin returned a punt 63 yds for a TD just 3 minutes into the game. Over the last 3 weeks, Austin has scored on a punt return, kick return, interception return and on a blocked field goal. JR Dontavis Bruce has been one of the main reasons for the Olive Branch success this year and he did not disappoint on this night. His first TD of the night was a 55 yd run that came just a minute after Horn Lake had scored to make it a 17-14 game. His second TD was a 67 yd run that came with just 2 minutes left in the game. QB Ross Trail came back from injuries to throw a 25 yd TD pass to Warren DeWalt. For the Eagles, Dalton Minton hit Dana Harris with a 75 yd TD pass and Malik Hawkins had a 12 yd TD run.

Germantown 13 Kirby 12

The Cougars won their first game of the year last week vs Wooddale and it was looking like a two game winning streak before Germantown rallied late. SR RB Anthony Quinn had 96 yds rushing and scored his 2nd TD of the game in the 4th quarter to give the Red Devils the win. JR QB Cedrick Crawford was 11-19 for 147 yds and 2 touchdowns, both of which went to JR WR Darius Stafford.

Central 32 Overton 20

The Warriors ground game was in the spotlight as they improved to 6-3 on the year with the win. Central rushed for over 300 yds on the night with a trio of juniors leading the way. RB Bernard Gray had 17 carries for 93 yds, RB Artavious Russell had 19 carries for 91 yds and QB Deddrick Thomas had 87 yds on 18 carries. Thomas continues to just score touchdowns at a ridiculous rate. He had 4 touchdowns on the night (3 rushing, 1 passing) and over the last three weeks has now scored 13 touchdowns. He has 17 rushing touchdowns on the year. Overton SR QB Lindsey Williams was 10-14 passing for 76 yds and 2 TD's and JR Damon Ross returned a punt 67 yds for a score as well.

DeSoto Central 21 Hernando 20

The Jaguars continued their winning ways with their standout sophomore leading the way. RB Alan Lamar's 2nd TD of the night proved to be the game winner in the third quarter. Lamar finished with 147 yds on 24 carries and has 10 rushing touchdowns and 11 overall on the year. He also caught 5 passes for 61 yds. Hernando rushed for almost 400 yds on the night and were led by JR Leon Cunningham with 114 yds on 17 carries, SR Dalton Crozier with 115 yds on 14 carries and SO Quinton Frazier with 95 yds on 15 carries and 2 TD's. Crozier also caught a TD pass for the Tigers.

Briarcrest 21 CBHS 19

The Saints rallied for the win and as a result, will now play for the district championship in two weeks. Trailing 13-7 in the third, Briarcrest got touchdowns from SO RB Rashad Muhammad and JR QB Ben Ellis to get the win. The Saints defense was big as well with 4 interceptions on the night and held the Brothers to only 7 first downs in the game. Ellis finished with 91 yds rushing on 15 carries and was 7-15 passing for 100 yds. SR Dominic Volpe intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yds for a score and SR K Dalton Young had 2 FG's for the Purple Wave.

Bartlett 21 Bolton 20

You have to love rivalry games because they always bring out the best in both teams. The Panthers held on for the win on senior night and were led by SR Braylon Porter. Porter rushed for 131 yds on 21 carries and a TD and JR QB Austin Kellon rushed for a TD and was 5-7 passing for 59 yds. The Panthers defense was up to the task as well with 2 interceptions and they blocked an extra point that proved to be the difference in the game. SR QB Austin Clark threw for 139 yds and 2 TD's for the Wildcats. JR Devante Williams caught 5 passes for 70 yds and a TD while SR Camaron King caught 2 passes for 63 yds and a TD.

Mitchell 48 Carver 12

The three hottest players in the area right now are Central's QB Deddrick Thomas, Melrose WR Cornelius Sturghill and Mitchell QB Tomadreus Trezevant. Thomas and Sturghill both continued their spectacular play and Trezevant did as well in leading the Tigers to the win. He passed for 254 yds and accounted for 4 more touchdowns (3 passing, 1 rushing). Trezevant now has 13 touchdowns over the last 3 weeks (10 passing, 3 rushing). His favorite target over the last 3 weeks is SR Dejuan McQuarters and McQuarters delivered the goods again. He caught 5 passes for 134 yds and a TD. Over the last 3 weeks he has 17 catches for 370 yds and 6 TD's and has returned a punt for a TD. The Mitchell defense stepped up to the plate as well with SR Calvin Martin returning an interception 45 yds for a TD and JR DT Lester Holt scooping up a fumble and returning it 45 yds for a score.

Ridgeway 38 Houston 14

When JR RB Earl Harrison left the game with an injury in the first half, there was cause for concern. After all Harrison has already rushed for over 1,000 yds on the year in 7 games. But sophomore Lilotis Walker stepped right in and didn't miss a beat in helping Ridgeway to the win. Walker had 223 yds rushing on 30 carries for a team that had 349 yds rushing on the night and almost 500 yds of total offense. JR QB Braxton Conard had 145 yds passing and 2 TD's and rushed for 2 TD's as well. Houston SR RB Malik Elion had another outstanding game by rushing for 134 yds on just 18 carries and a TD.

Cordova 50 Kingsbury 22

The Wolves continue their winning ways and have put themselves in position to make the playoffs over the last 2 weeks of the season. Cordova has won 4 straight and were led in this one by SR RB Charles Taylor and SR QB Jireh Fordham. Coming into the game, Taylor was one of 3 running backs that had already surpassed the 1,000 yd mark. He finished with 104 yds rushing on just 15 carries and 2 TD's. Fordham was 8-15 passing for 172 yds and 2 TD's while SR WR Marquis Ward had 4 catches for 133 yds and a TD as well. SR Molefi Maat also returned a punt 52 yds for a score.

Collierville 36 Munford 13

There wasn't an emotional letdown for the Dragons Friday as they went outside the district and were on the road. JR QB Alex Hicks had another big night for Collierville going 13 for 25 for 323 yds and 4 touchdowns. 2 of those TD passes went to JR WR Drew Van De Vuurst, who had 4 catches in the game for 122 yds. FACS 55 Lausanne 25

The two teams combined for almost 1,000 yds of total offense and 7 touchdowns of over 35 yds but when the dust settled it was the Crusaders that locked up the number 2 slot in the division and clinched a playoff spot. The ground game for FACS was up to the task and were led by Kortney Morris and James Alexander. Morris came into the game the second leading rusher in the Shelby Metro area and he was tremendous as usual rushing for 209 yds on just 14 carries and touchdowns of 44 & 52 yds. Alexander had 101 yds on 7 carries and a 54 yd TD. JR QB Bobby Downing was 12-19 passing for 209 yds and 5 TD's. It was the second straight week that Downing had a big game. He had 3 touchdowns in the win last week as well. JR WR Jack Evans caught 3 passes for 88 yds and 2 TD's while JR WR Christopher Collins caught 3 passes for 66 yds and 2 TD's. The Lynx rushed for almost 350 yds on the night and were led by SR RB Michael Goodrich. Goodrich had 20 carries for 187 yds and 2 touchdowns and JR QB Spencer Mackey had a touchdown rushing and 1 passing for Lausanne.

BTW 38 Oakhaven 30 (OT)

This game had 3 special teams touchdowns and required some extra time to produce a winner. The Patrick Franklin to Michael Green connection clicked repeatedly during the night and none bigger than the game winning touchdown in overtime to give the Warriors the win. Franklin had 61 yds rushing and was 11-23 passing for 185 yds and 3 TD's. All of those touchdowns went to Green who caught 5 passes for 85 yds in the game while SR DeAndre Rodgers returned a kickoff 95 yds for a score for BTW as well. SR Cordarius Stephens returned a kickoff 90 yds for a score and a punt 43 yds for a score for Oakhaven.

Covington 10 Ripley 8

The Chargers rallied for the win behind JR RB DaiQuon Norfolk and a pretty good defensive effort. Norfolk rushed for 139 yds on 21 carries and the only touchdown for the Chargers in the fourth quarter to give them the win. The Covington defense held the Tigers to 78 yds rushing and 67 yds passing.

St. George's 62 Tipton Rosemark 9

The Gryphons are on a roll! They have now won 4 straight after losing the first 4 games of the year although one of those losses has now been forfeited and have put themselves in position to play for the district championship. A big reason why was the play of SR QB Dean Brown. Brown had a 73 yd TD run to open the scoring and followed that up with 4 touchdown passes. Brown was 6-11 passing for 161 yds and finished with 89 yds rushing. SR Walker Ward returned an interception 57 yds for a touchdown as well.

Manassas 48 Douglass 14

The Tigers trailed after a quarter before exploding for 22 points in the second quarter and cruising to the win. SR Rayford Albright had 3 scores on the night, including a 72 yd punt return. SO QB James Smith rushed for 2 TD's and passed for 2 TD's as well. SO RB LaDarrion Seymour had 150 yds rushing on just 11 carries and a TD while JR CB Manario Roach picked off a pass and returned it 61 yds for a score for Manassas.
