Game recaps for the week of September 26

Whitehaven 34 Ridgeway 30

This game was everything that it was hyped up to be and wasn't decided until the final moments of the game. Ridgeway led 30-28 when Whitehaven intercepted a pass at the 1 yd line. The Tigers then marched 99 yds in 9 plays and Jordan Williams hit Kerrick Jones with a touchdown pass with 1:18 left to go in the game to give Whitehaven the win. The Roadrunners got all the way down to the Whitehaven 26 but could not pull out the victory. Williams and Jones both finished with outstanding numbers-Williams was 21-33 for 325 yds and 2 TD's while Jones caught 11 passes for 131 yds and the game winning score. RB Derwyn Martin added 109 yds and 2 TD's on only 15 carries for the Tigers. Ridgeway was led by standout RB Earl Harrison. Not only did Harrison rush for 214 yds and 2 TD's on 27 carries, he caught 3 passes for 72 yds and even threw a 27 yd TD pass.

Houston 40 Bartlett 7

The Mustangs remain unbeaten on the season behind their very potent ground game. Houston rushed for 304 yds on the evening and had 462 yds of total offense in the game. Colby Cartwright had 12 carries for 150 yds and a touchdown, while younger brother Seth rushed for 2 scores and Chase Moss-Piorek had 101 yds and a touchdown on just 10 carries to lead the Mustangs. QB Jared Schmidt was 9-13 passing for 158 yds and 2 TD's. RB Lamarcus Young led the Panthers with 94 yds rushing on only 7 carries.

St. Benedict 41 St. George's 15

The Eagles rebounded from their first loss of the season in a big way behind senior Joey Magnifico and the offensive line. Magnifico rushed for 3 touchdowns and 145 yds on only 16 carries while Colton Cochran added 77 yds and 2 TD's on 14 carries as St. Benedict rushed for 333 yds in the game. The Eagles defense did its part as well, intercepting two passes while Austin Cary recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. Chase Hayden led the Gryphons with 92 yds and a touchdown on 18 carries.

ECS 36 USJ 7

ECS gets a lot of pub for their high scoring offense but their defense is pretty good too. The Eagles held USJ to -3 yds rushing in the game and 103 yds of total offense as they earned their fifth win of the year. Why teams continue to throw at SR DB Harrison Cox, I do not know. Cox got things started by intercepting a pass and returning it 49 yds for a touchdown. It was the second straight week with a pick-six for Cox who now has 5 interceptions on the season. After that, the ECS offense took over, piling up over 400 yds of total offense in the game. They were led by JR RB Drew Croegart who finished with 21 carries for 149 yds and 2 touchdowns.

Southaven 40 Olive Branch 21

This game was close until late in the third when the Chargers broke it open. Southaven scored 19 points over the final 13 minutes of action to improve to 4-1. Things didn't start off to well for the Chargers as Olive Branch KyKy Austin picked off two passes in the opening quarter and returned the second one 61 yds for a touchdown to give the Conquistadors the early lead. Those were the only mistakes that Southaven QB Nic Kennedy would make on the night. Kennedy finished 13-19 for 188 yds and 3 TD's. Terry Williams was his favorite target with 9 catches for 138 yds and 2 TD's. But the Chargers can hurt you via the air and the ground as Kevaunn Johnson rushed for 154 yds and 2 TD's on only 19 carries and Dea'undre Wallace added 96 yds on 20 carries as Southaven amassed 477 yds of total offense in the game. Olive Branch was led by QB Mario Nolan-Dillard who finished 13-26 for 149 yds and 2 touchdowns and Jay Banks who rushed 5 times for 89 yds and a score. Defensively for the Conquistadors, they had 4 players in double figures in tackles. Micah Webb had 18 tackles and forced a fumble, Willie Bland had 12,  Fred Walls had 11 & Demetrius Harris had 10.

East 33 Briarcrest 7

East DB Kyland Tate was second in the Shelby-Metro area in interceptions last year with 7 and he looks like he wants to own that title outright this year. Tate had two interceptions on the night, including a 65 yd return for a touchdown. He now has 5 on the season and Tate also forced a fumble as well while teammate Khonner Applewhite scooped up a fumble and returned it 30 yds for a touchdown. The Mustangs offense did its part as well with almost 400 yds of total offense. JR RB DeVante Turner had 20 carries for 157 yds and 2 scores while QB Eric Banks was 11-15 for 159 yds.

CBHS 39 White Station 24

The standout performance of the night and maybe the season took place over on Walnut Grove Friday night and it came from a young man who is going to be playing baseball at the next level. Walker Grisanti has already committed to Vanderbilt to play college baseball but that doesn't stop him from putting on the pads for head coach Scott Vogel's team. Vogel is glad he did. Grisanti rushed for 289 yds and 5 touchdowns on 31 carries to lead the Purple Wave to victory. Cameron Sanders also had a 43 yd pick-six for the Brothers. White Station led after the first play of the game 7-0 when Terry Wright went 82 yds for a touchdown. Dillon Mitchell added 77 yds rushing and a touchdown on 7 carries and returned a kick 98 yds for a score for the Spartans.

KIPP 28 BTW 0

The Phoenix earned their second win of the season and first district win with almost 400 yds of total offense on the evening. Eric Thomas had 20 carries for 156 yds and QB Telly Crawford was 12-20 for 150 yds passing and a touchdown to Kevin Davenport who also caught 7 passes for 93 yds. JR WR Odell Wright had 4 catches for 86 yds to lead the Warriors.

Arlington 42 Raleigh Egypt 6

The Arlington defense was in top form in this one by holding the Pharoahs to 38 yds of total offense and recording a safety as well as they improve to 5-1. Freshman QB Tate Kolwyck threw 3 touchdown passes and rushed for a fourth to lead the Tigers. RB Keelon Webber rushed 13 times for 98 yds while Joseph Stevenson added 73 yds and a touchdown on 9 carries. DaVonte Boyland had 72 yds rushing on 14 carries for Raleigh Egypt.

Center Hill 42 Lewisburg 28

A shootout between two of the area's top quarterbacks went the way of the Mustangs. Center Hill QB Danterius Ellington rushed for 4 touchdowns and threw for another as they improve to 4-2 on the year but more importantly, open district play with a win. Each caught 4 passes and a touchdown in the game, Wammack had 79 yds receiving and Hoffman 73.

FACS 57 Halls 14

The Crusaders actually trailed in the first quarter 14-13 before turning it on to coast to the win. FACS had almost 600 yds of total offense in the game and were led by an almost perfect performance from their senior quarterback. Bobby Downing completed all 10 of his passes in the game; 9 of them went to his teammates and one was intercepted. Downing finished with 215 yds and 3 TD's and rushed for a fourth and 62 yds. TE Drew Rutland was on the receiving end of all three of those touchdown passes for a total of 114 yds. RB James Alexander was simply a beast with 16 carries for 263 yds and 2 touchdowns. The Crusaders defense was up to the task as well with a safety and four interceptions in the game.

Northpoint Christian 30 North Delta 14

The Trojans were down 14-7 at the half but relied on their ground game to comeback and get the win. Northpoint Christian rushed for 346 yds in the game and as usual were led by one of the area's top running backs. Christian Saulsberry rushed 19 times for 215 yds and two touchdowns. He now has almost 800 yds rushing to go with 14 touchdowns in 6 games. QB Nelson Fabrizius added 78 yds and a TD on 16 carries and he threw for 76 yds as well.

Fairley 19 Sheffield 18

Some times in football, you get a second chance. Fairley K Tyrell Carter is most thankful for those opportunities. Carter lined up in the waning seconds of the ball game to kick a game winning 26 yd field goal. He missed as the clock ran out but had a second chance at redemption when Sheffield was penalized for roughing the kicker. Carter then attempted a 21 yd FG and the odds must have been in his favor as his kick hit the goalpost and bounced through to give the Bulldogs the win. Darius Moore came up huge for Fairley with a 98 yd fumble return for a touchdown when the Knights were knocking on the door.

Germantown 41 Kingsbury 0

The Red Devils earn their first win of the season behind their trademark running attack and suffocating defense. Germantown rushed for 312 yds while holding the Falcons to 65 yds of total offense. Both teams combined for over 800 yds of total offense in this shootout that went the way of the Lynx. It was an almost perfect passing performance for Lausanne as quarterbacks Spencer Mackey & Nyle Love combined to go 11-12 for 225 yds and 4 touchdowns. Love was 4-5 for 81 yds and 2 scores and he also rushed for 2 touchdowns. Mackey was 7-7 for 144 yds and 2 touchdowns, rushed 4 times for 97 yds & caught a touchdown pass from Love. WR Adam Boyce had 7 catches for 154 yds and 2 TD's while RB Chris Witherspoon rushed for 94 yds and 2 TD's on just 17 carries. The Rebels were led by AJ Hightower who rushed 9 times for 88 yds and a TD. All everything Logan Stewart was pressed into duty at QB and threw for 183 yds and 2 scores but was intercepted 3 times. Colton Vaughn caught 4 passes for 77 yds and a score while Ethan Carpenter caught 2 passes for 62 yds and a touchdown and kicked a 31 yd FG.

MUS 29 Lafayette (MS) 24

The Owls trailed 24-23 with 6:54 left in the game before turning to their most dependable player to rally for the victory. Colton Neel touched the ball on seven of the nine plays it took for MUS to regain the lead and the final time was a 33 yd touchdown pass from Marcus Evans. Neel rushed 25 times for 162 yds and 3 touchdowns in the game. Neel not only is the career touchdown leader at MUS with 48 but he has surpassed Gary Wunderlich as the career point leader as well. LB Tim Hart led the way on defense with 13 tackles and AJ Hunt had 12.

MBA 42 Millington 20

The Trojans suffered their first loss of the year but not without a valiant effort. One week after losing starting sophomore RB Keno Taylor to a season ending knee injury, his backup, sophomore D'Monte Kemp went down in the third quarter with a broken ankle. Taylor had almost 700 yds rushing in the first five weeks of the season and Kemp was showing that he could pick up the slack before his injury, rushing for 74 yds on 10 carries. JR QB Eldon Tyms shouldered even more of the burden of running the offense with the two injuries, did as much as he possibly could before suffering a high ankle sprain. Tyms rushed for 104 yds and a touchdown on 12 carries and was 15-23 passing for 175 yds and 2 touchdowns. Demarius Curry had 8 catches for 65 yds and a TD while WR Artavious Thomas caught 4 balls for 79 yds and a TD. Defensively Millington was led by Patrick Macon with 14 tackles and Jonathan Clements with 11.

South Panola 63 Horn Lake 26

There are a number of undefeated teams over the years that have made the trip to Batesville only to leave with a loss and on Friday night, Horn Lake was another one of those teams. The Eagles came into the game with a 4-0 record but could not slow down the Tigers. QB Dalton Minton threw 4 touchdown passes in the game but also was picked off 5 times. WR Kameron Coleman had 6 catches for 79 yds and a TD while Todd Wilson also had 6 catches for 57 yds and a TD for Horn Lake.
