Game recaps for Sept 4,5,6

MUS 33 Canton McKinley (OH) 20

Meet Colton Neel. A mild-mannered running back who doubles as a touchdown machine for the MUS Owls. Last year he led the Shelby Metro area with 24 rushing touchdowns (26 total) before having his year end prematurely due to injury. Neel gave the crowd at historic Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio a little taste of what he is able to do by rushing for 4 touchdowns and 148 yds on 29 carries and catching a TD pass to lead the Owls to the win. QB Marcus Evans rushed for 110 yds and threw for 106 yds and a TD. The Owls "D" was up to the task with Thomas Pickens intercepting 2 passes and Peyton Jones had 4 pass break ups in addition to holding Ohio State commitment Eric Glover-Williams to just 39 yds rushing on 13 carries.


Harding Academy 35 FACS 34

There's a reason you have to contributions from all three phases of the game-offense, defense & special teams-because if one of those is shut down, you can still win the game with execution in the others. Harding Academy only had 161 yds of offense on the night so they had to turn to the defense and special teams to secure the win. The Lions had a 89 yd kickoff return by Nick Martin for a TD and the "D" picked off 4 passes on the night and blocked the game tying extra point on the last play of the game. Carliss Settles had three touchdowns on the night (2 rushing, 1 interception) & FR QB Zac Montgomery threw for 116 yds and a TD. FACS was led by QB Bobby Downing and RB's Caleb Johnson & James Alexander. Downing threw for two scores, Johnson rushed for two scores and Alexander had 118 yds rushing on just 19 carries.

Whitehaven 28 White Station 20

This high profile matchup goes the way of the Tigers and they can thank their defense. Whitehaven intercepted 4 passes on the evening including one at the goal line by Jabril Malone, Fydale Williams' 45 yd return for a touchdown, Alabama commitment Josh McMillon's pick to set up the final touchdown and Christopher Holmes pick to seal the win. QB Jordan Williams threw for 2 TD's on the night and RB Ayron Thompson rushed for 100 yds on 14 carries to lead Whitehaven.  JR standout Dillon Mitchell did it again for the Spartans. He rushed for 75 yds on 10 carries and a TD while catching 3 passes for 57 yds. SR Terry Wright blocked a FG and a XP for White Station as well.

Arlington 41 Bartlett 7

The Arlington offense rolled up over 420 yds of offense and remained unbeaten at 3-0. Keelon Webber led the way with 98 yds and 2 TD's on 16 carries while Joseph Stevenson rushed for 92 yds on 12 carries in his first action since suffering a concussion in the opening week of the season. The Tigers rushed for 255 yds in the game but they were far from one dimensional. FR QB Tate Kolwyck threw for 172 yds and three TD's. Two of those went to Everett Mitchell who caught 4 passes on the night for 80 yds. Arlington DB Sidney Austin picked off 2 passes to lead the defense. The area's leading rusher, Bartlett RB Jurieen Martin, had has night end in the first quarter after suffering a shoulder injury.

Tipton Rosemark 37 Fayette Academy 22

The Rebels improved to 3-0 on the year and Logan Stewart continues to be a big reason why. Stewart had 4 touchdowns on the night including his area leading 3rd interception return for a TD. QB AJ Hightower had two more touchdown passes on the evening, boosting his total to 6 on the year.

Olive Branch 26 Charleston 16

KyKy Austin had a knack for big plays last year with multiple returns for touchdown via punt return, kickoff return and interception return. He picked up where he left off with a 70 yd interception return for a TD on the final play of the first half to lead the Conquistadors to the victory. Austin had two interceptions in the game. The Olive Branch "D" had 6 players in double figures in tackles. They were led by Willie Bland with 13, Fred Walls with 12, KyKy Austin, Demetrius Harris & Danny Rayborn with 11 and Sanchez Blake with 10.

Central 42 Melrose 18

A matchup of two unbeaten teams went the way of the Warriors as they scored all of their points in the first half and cruised to the win. Artavious Russell led the way for Central with three touchdowns and Deddrick Thomas, the Mississippi St commitment, had a 60 yd TD run before leaving the game due to illness.

Houston 31 Wooddale 16

The Mustangs improve to 3-0 on the year behind the play of Jared Schmidt and the offensive line. Schmidt rushed for 71 yds and 2 TD's and threw for 88 yds and a TD. The O-Line paved the way as Houston rushed for over 300 yds in the game. Colby Cartwright had 170 yds on 23 carries and a TD for the Mustangs. Myron Kimber had a 61 yd TD run for the Cardinals.

Briarcrest 17 St George's 14

McKellar Greer's 23 yd FG with 50 seconds left in the game gave the Saints the win. Hunter Hill had a huge game with a 74 yd punt return for a TD (his second of the year) and two interceptions including the game winner with 22 seconds left in the game. Gryphons standout RB Chase Hayden had 19 carries for 115 yds and a TD while QB Ben Glass threw for 159 yds and a score as well.

Millington 23 Cordova 16 (OT)

Eldon Tyms scored in overtime to give the Trojans the win but sophomore Keno Taylor was the standout in this game. Taylor rushed for 181 yds and a TD as Millington improved to 3-0. Cordova SO QB Devin Coleman threw for 2 TD's to lead the Wolves.

Fairley 33 Douglass 0

Defense wins championships and on this night, it was the difference in the ballgame. The Bulldogs had 4 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries on the night and turned 3 of them into touchdowns. Terrance Holt picked off a pass and returned it 30 yds for a score while Darius Moore returned a fumble 93 yds for a TD and Rickey Wright returned a fumble 17 yds for a score. The Fairley defense held the Red Devils to just 76 yds of total offense in the game. Juanye Stuckey had 91 yds and 2 TD's on 20 carries to lead the Bulldog offense while Jerico Lewis rushed for 86 yds on 20 carries.

Horn Lake 49 Rosa Fort 28

The Eagles only led by 1 after three quarters but outscored Rosa Fort 20-0 in the fourth to remain unbeaten at 3-0. SR QB Dalton Minton was 24-42 for 326 yds and 3 TD's. JR WR Kameron Coleman had 4 catches for 69 yds and SR WR Todd Wilson & SO RB Peyton Logan each had 4 catches for 45 yds. Logan had 200 all purpose yds in the game including a 83 yd punt return for a TD. The Horn Lake "D" did their part as well with 2 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries. 


Collierville 14 Germantown 7

A good old fashioned rivalry that wasn't decided until the final seconds. Ed Pomphrett scored on a 11 yd run with just 24 seconds remaining to give the Dragons the win. Collierville's Drew Van de Vuurst scored on a 55 yd run to open the scoring and he finished with 86 yds on 7 carries. Rodney Williams had 5 catches for 35 yds and a TD for the Red Devils.

Ridgeway 41 Southwind 6

The Roadrunners came out a little slow in the first half but kicked into gear in the second half and earned their second win of the year. They led 14-0 before QB Braxton Conard and his trio of receivers took over. Conard finished 10-17 for 203 yds with 4 TD's. Katavious Taylor had a 66 yd TD, Cayman Gordan had a 42 yd TD and Marquette Murdock caught 2 TD passes. The Ridgeway defense was more than impressive with 4 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries and 6 sacks on the evening. Sophomore CB Joseph Newberry had two of those interceptions and now has 3 through his first 2 games. JR LB Darron Johnson had 17 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and 3 pass breakups. Johnson has 27 tackles through the first two games of the season.

ECS 56 Lausanne 20

The Eagles jumped out to 25-7 lead after 1 quarter and never looked back. ECS had over 420 yds of total offense in the game as 7 different Eagles scored touchdowns. RB Harrison Cox had 3 carries for 61 yds and a TD & threw a 47 yd TD pass. Keegan Westbrook was 7-13 for 91 yds and a TD while backup QB Riley Watkins was 5-5 for 98 yds and a TD. Reid Halford returned a kickoff 97 yds for a score for the Eagles as well. QB Spencer Mackey accounted for all three touchdowns for the Lynx. Mackey had 16 carries for 144 yds and 2 TD's and threw for a TD. Nyle Love rushed for 132 yds on 13 carries for Lausanne as they amassed 276 yds rushing in the game.

East 42 Overton 0

The Mustangs continue to click on all cylinders as they improve to 3-0 on the year. East rushed for 274 yds in the game and they were led by junior standout RB DeVante Turner. Turner lead the Shelby Metro area in touchdowns after 2 weeks and added to it again in this game by rushing for 101 yds and 2 TD's on 14 carries. QB Eric Banks rushed for 71 yds on only 4 carries and 3 of those went for touchdowns while RB Roderick Fields had 6 carries for 78 yds and a TD. The Mustangs "D" was spectacular as they allowed only 24 yds of total offense for the game.


Northpoint Christian 38 Holly Springs 26

The Trojans trailed at the half 13-10 and then Christian Saulsberry took over. Saulsberry scored 3 of his 4 touchdowns in the second half as Northpoint Christian rallied for the win. Saulsberry had 19 carries for 153 in the game to go along with his 4 touchdowns. Devin Davis had 93 yds on 10 carries and QB Nelson Fabrizius had 150 yds of total offense for the Trojans.

Manassas 51 Sheffield 14

Manassas QB James Smith is a scoring machine. The 6'4 junior had 7 touchdowns coming into the game (6 passing, 1 rushing) and accounted for 6 touchdowns in this one. Smith only completed 4 passes on the evening but 3 went for touchdowns. He was 4-7 for 107 yds and rushed 8 times for 70 yds and 3 touchdowns as the Tigers had 458 yds of total offense. WR Antonio Turner caught 2 passes for 70 yds and 2 TD's while RB LiDarrion Seymour rushed for 101 yds on 10 carries and caught a TD pass and Ladarrius Yancey scored two touchdowns as well. Sheffield QB Bobby Harper had 140 yds of total offense and a TD while Jeremiah Walker returned a fumble 40 yds for a score. 

Mitchell 38 KIPP 0

The Tigers raced out to a 22-0 lead after one and never looked back in getting their first win of the season. SR QB Tomadreus Trezevant was 6-11 passing for 161 yds, 2 TD's and 4 2-pt conversions.RB Randy Browley rushed for two scores while RB Joseph Fifer carried 3 times for 89 yds and a 65 yd TD.WR Jaylon Moore caught 3 passes for 81 yds and a score as well.

Hamilton 28 BTW 0

RB Cameron Ficklin got things started with a 40 yd TD run to give the Wildcats a lead they would never relinquish. Ficklin finished with 131 yds rushing on just 10 carries for the game. QB Jonathan Robinson rushed for a TD and threw for a TD and Cadarius Benton picked off a pass and returned it 53 yds for a TD for Hamilton.

Corinth 45 Lewisburg 27

The Patriots had over 450 yds of total offense but could not stop the home team and fell to 1-2 on the year. QB Jake Harville was 19-35 for 300 yds and 2 TD's passing and rushed for 83 yds on 13 carries and 2 TD's. WR's Benji Galbraith caught 4 passes for 80 yds, Tucker Wammack had 4 receptions for 72 yds and a TD and Christian Fowler had 4 catches for 52 yds for Lewisburg.

Center Hill 45 Byhalia 6

Center Hill jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. SO RB Kyle James rushed for 50 yds and 2 TD's on only 8 carries. QB Dan Ellington rushed for 2 TD's and was 9-14 passing for 146 yds and a score. JR WR Jonathan Weeks had 4 catches for 77 yds and a score for the Mustangs

West Memphis Christian 38 Lee Academy (AR) 0

The Black Knights had over 400 yds of total offense in the game as they got their first win of the year. SR Tyler Baker led the way with 138 yds rushing and 2 TD's on just 14 carries while JR Caleb Seale had 104 yds on just 9 carries. Baker caught a TD pass and Seale threw a TD pass in the game as well. FR QB Patrick Ratliff was 5-7 passing for 116 yds and a score. SR Brice Fitzgerald was a standout on both sides of the ball for the Black Knights. Fitzgerald caught 4 passes for 71 yds and a TD, had 7 tackles, caused 3 fumbles and returned one of those 57 yds for a TD.

Munford 35 MLK Prep 0

The Cougars improved to 3-0 under first year coach JR Kirby. David Simon had 2 rushing TD's (1,5) and so did Andre Thomas (25,63) as Munford dominated from start to finish.

Southaven 38 CBHS 12

The Chargers improved to 3-0 on the year with the impressive win over the Purple Wave. QB Nic Kennedy continues his stellar play on the season. Kennedy threw for 2 touchdowns and rushed for 2 touchdowns to lead Southaven. Keegan Voss had a TD pass & Nick Azar had a 36 yd FG for CBHS.
