Game recaps for week of September 12

Whitehaven 15 Central 12

This was a match-up of two undefeated teams and district opponents and it wasn't settled until the final 90 seconds of the game. Jordan Williams hit Kerrick Jones from 13 yds out with 1:27 remaining to give Whitehaven the win. The ensuing extra point was blocked and left the door open for the Warriors to drive down the field and get a game-tying field goal but Tigers sophomore DB Jabril Mabone knocked down a pass with less than 20 seconds left to enable Whitehaven to breathe a little easier. Williams finished 12-17 for 139 yds to go along with the touchdown while Jones had 9 catches for 84. QB Deddrick Thomas had 127 yds rushing and 2 TD's on 22 carries for the Warriors. Head coach Rodney Saulsberry earned his 100th win at Whitehaven with the victory.

East 28 White Station 27

The stars came out at Melrose Stadium for this District 16-AAA match-up between the Mustangs and the Spartans. There were big plays from both teams and this game wasn't decided until the final 14 seconds. East trailed 27-20 until Teddrick McGhee scored on a 9 yd touchdown pass from QB Eric Banks. McGhee then scored the game winning two point conversion off a fake extra point try to give the Mustangs the victory and kept them unbeaten on the year. White Station standout junior Dillon Mitchell was at it again. He caught a 67 yd TD pass from QB Burk Williams to open the scoring on the evening and he added a 75 yd punt return for a touchdown that gave his team the lead before the final East drive. Williams finished 11-22 for 181 yds & 2 TD's. WR Terry Wright caught that second TD pass and had 5 catches for 69 yds. East had their own standout junior and he was spectacular on the night. DeVante Turner had 29 carries for 230 yds and a 60 yd TD run.

Ridgeway 22 Henry Co 15

The Roadrunners made two trips to Paris, TN last year and suffered the same fate each time. That second loss ended their season in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs as the host team went on to win the 5A state championship. Ridgeway is a year older and wiser and once again made the trip to Paris to take on the Patriots. However, this time they kept their composure and pulled out the win. Only 8 seconds remained in the game when QB Braxton Conard hit Katavious Taylor from 28 yds out to give Ridgeway the victory. It was the second TD pass of the game for Conard who finished 10-21 for 134 yds. RB Earl Harrison led the ground game with 21 carries for 144 yds and a TD.

Millington 41 Munford 13

The "M & M Bowl" is the annual rivalry game between Millington and Munford. Two communities separated by just a stretch of road and this year's edition featured two unbeaten teams, each at 3-0. The game turned in the final minute of the first half. When Trojan DB Marcus Winston intercepted a pass at his own 9 yd line with just over a minute left in the first half, everyone assumed that the Millington offense would just take a knee and go into the locker room up 10-0. Everyone was wrong as the Trojans went 91 yds in 2 plays capped by a 59 yd TD pass from Eldon Tyms to Kip Fleming. Munford fumbled on the first play from scrimmage following the kickoff and Millington recovered. Tyms hit Demarius Curry on the very next play from 37 yds out for a TD and the Trojans never looked back. Tyms finished 14-26 for 264 yds and 3 TD's and rushed for 72 yds and a TD on 7 carries as well. Curry had 7 receptions for 117 yds to go along with the TD, Fleming had 4 for 72 & SO RB D'Monte Kemp had a 59 yd TD run for Millington. LB Patrick Macon had 10 tackles while forcing & recovering two fumbles to lead the defense. Munford rushed for 321 yds in the game and were led by David Simon, Clayton Richardson & Jacob Ross. Simon had 21 carries for 117 yds, Richardson had 8 carries for 95 yds and a TD and Ross had 17 carries for 94 yds and a score for the Cougars.

Desoto Central 39 Lake Cormorant 20

The Jaguars have been an up and down team from week to week this year. This week it was their turn to be up and Alan Lamar led the way. The standout junior RB had 33 carries in the game for 225 yds and 2 TD's, one of which was 78 yds. But he wasn't the only star to shine on this night. Cortez Sisco took care of things on both sides of the ball. Sisco caught 5 passes for 54 yds and a TD, blocked a punt, picked off a pass and finished with 11 tackles. Peyton McMahon had 10 tackles, Keshun Abram had 2 interceptions and Deondre Jones returned a fumble 40 yds for a TD to lead the Jags defense. Lake Cormorant QB Bailey Walker had over 300 yds of total offense on the night. He was 24-45 passing for 252 yds and a TD while rushing for 72 yds on 10 carries. SO WR Bryan Blocker had 7 catches for 89 yds and a TD while SO WR Corlus Hicks had 4 catches for 68 yds for the Gators.

MUS 30 Liberty 12

The standout performances in a game always come from the skill guys-QB,RB,WR- but without the "big uglies" up front, you wouldn't be hearing about those performances. The Owls offensive line was so dominating against Liberty Friday night that there were times that the MUS running backs weren't touched before they were five yards past the line of scrimmage. In the end, that meant that Colton Neel had another stellar night. Neel had 24 carries for 168 yds and 2 TD's. With those two touchdowns, Neel tied the school record for career touchdowns with 44. Bradley Foley added 84 yds on just 6 carries and Michael Jacobs had 3 field goals to pace MUS who rushed for 280 yds in the game.  The MUS "D" had 3 different players in double figures in tackles. JR LB William Rantzlow had 14 tackles including 3 TFL, SO LB Evan Smith had 11 tackles and broke up two passes and JR LB Swep Wallace had 10 tackles and 2 TFL.

Craigmont 35 Westwood 0

If these is a hotter quarterback in the Shelby Metro area than Craigmont's Andrew McIntyre, I would like to meet him. McIntyre threw 4 touchdown passes to lead the Chiefs to the victory. He finished 8-15 for 171 yds to go along with the four scores and now has 14 touchdown passes on the season vs zero interceptions. Darrious Threlkeld caught 2 of those touchdown passes for 87 yds and now has 6 TD's on the year. The Craigmont "D" did their part by holding the Longhorns to -9 yds rushing and only 83 yds passing.

Mitchell 34 BTW 14

Another QB with an outstanding game was Tomadreus Trezevant. The senior signal caller was 17-28 for 243 yds and 4 TD's to lead the Tigers to victory. His favorite target on the evening was fellow senior Jaylon Moore. Moore caught 8 passes for 145 yds and 3 TD's. Houston 34 Dickson Co 13

Houston starts off 4-0 for the second straight year behind a balanced offensive attack. Colby Cartwright rushed for 113 yds and a TD on only 17 carries and QB Jared Schmidt added 60 yds on 15 carries. Schmidt also was 12-17 passing for 178 yds and 2 TD's. Clark Anderson caught 5 of those passes for 75 yds and Chanse Pullen caught 4 for 54 yds and a TD.

CBHS 42 West Memphis 7

The Purple Wave even their record at 2-2 behind a new found passing attack and some big time plays on defense. Keegan Voss was 10-12 passing for 162 yds and 2 TD's and rushed for a TD as well for the Brothers. Warren Hill picked off a pass and returned it 60 yds for a touchdown and Cameron Sanders did the same, returning a pass 97 yds for a touchdown to lead the defense. RB Quintavious Coleman had 13 carries for 143 yds and a 54 yd touchdown for West Memphis.

Collierville 15 Cordova 0

The Dragons improve to 3-1 on the season behind outstanding play from the defense. Collierville held the Wolves to 92 yds of total offense on the night and the Dragons offense got a great performance from JR RB Ed Pomphrett, who had 35 carries for 206 yds.

Lewisburg 38 Independence 14

QB Jake Harville continues his red hot start to his junior season but this time in a different fashion. Harville came into the game with 850 yds passing and 11 touchdowns. He only completed 9 of 21 for 216 yds and 1 TD on the night but he got the job done via the ground. Harville rushed 8 times for 58 yds and 4 TD's to lead the Patriots to the victory. Benji Galbraith caught 3 passes for 77 yds, Tucker Wammack 3 for 48 & a TD and Christian Fowler 2 for 54 yds.

FACS 42 Tipton Rosemark 21

The Crusaders hand the Rebels their first loss of the year by breaking open the game with a 21 point third quarter. FACS led 14-7 at the half before QB Bobby Downing and the offense took over. Downing threw four touchdown passes in the second half with three of them coming during the third quarter. Downing finished 17-23 for 243 yds and he also rushed for a TD as well. Logan Stewart continues to have a fantastic season for the Rebels. Stewart caught 2 passes for 70 yds and threw a TD pass as well.

Melrose 54 Kirby 26

If you like offensive, big play football, then this game was for you. There were a total of 12 touchdowns scored in the game between the two teams. 9 of the 12 scores were for 30 yds or longer and there were touchdowns in all phases of the game-offense, defense, special teams. QB Cedrick Crawford put on a show for the Melrose faithful. Crawford came into the game as the second leading passer in our weekly Shelby Metro Sports stats for the area players with 762 yds, 9 TD and only 1 interception and was completing 70% of his passes. Add to that his performance Friday night: 17-26 for 428 yds and touchdowns of 31,36,47,50, 56 and 57. That's right...6 touchdowns. I think it's safe to say that he will be the area's leading passer when the stats come out later this week. Johnathan Johnson was the favorite target on the night, catching 8 balls for 183 yds and 2 TD's. Tony Pollard caught 4 passes for 102 yds and 2 scores & Kevon Hall caught 2 passes for 70 yds and a TD. Mason also rushed for 65 yds on 10 carries and 2 TD's. Telvin Rucker had 17 carries for 82 yds while Deadrick Jackson caught a 74 yd TD pass for the Cougars.

Briarcrest 28 Germantown 14

The Saints improve to 3-1 on the year with the victory over the Red Devils. Usually it's the arm of Ben Ellis leading the way but on this night it was all about his legs. Ellis rushed 20 times for 86 yds and 3 TD's to lead Briarcrest. Germantown QB Jacob Ivy only completed 6 passes on the evening but they went for 164 yds and 2 TD's. Rodney Williams was on the receiving end of 5 of those completions for 157 yds and both scores.

ECS 45 St. George's 22

If I told you that the final offensive numbers were 366-185, who do you think would have won the game? Normally the team with the 366 but in this instance, that wasn't the case. ECS had only 185 yds of total offense in the game but got contributions in all three phases of the game to get the win going away. After a Gryphons touchdown to tie the game at 14 in the first quarter, Carter Dunn returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yds for a touchdown for the Eagles. It was followed by a Stephen Oliver 60 yd interception return for a touchdown (one of three interceptions in the game for the Eagles) and ECS never looked back as they scored 31 unanswered points. St. George's was led by RB Aaron Hayden who had 21 carries for 183 yds and 2 TD's while WR Corey Jones caught 5 passes for 86 yds and a TD as well.

Douglass 30 MLK Prep 14

The Red Devils earned their first win of the season by getting it done on both sides of the ball. Douglass gave up only 65 yds to the Rams while gaining 300 yds on their own.
