Week 7 recaps

Houston 35 Ridgeway 27

One of two games on the night in District 15-AAA that featured teams battling for the top spot and neither one disappointed the fans. Ridgeway raced out to an early lead but the Mustangs came storming back to get the win. The Roadrunners led 21-10 with 217 left in the first half before Houston took over. Mustangs JR K CJ Stafford had a 52 yd FG and then Walker Lamberth hit Gavin McCrary with a TD pass to score 11 points in those final 2 minutes of the half to tie the game at 21. Houston added 2 TD's in the 3rd quarter for 25 unanswered points to take a 35-21 lead before Ridgeway's standout RB, Orlando Johnson scored his 2nd TD of the game. Johnson finished the night with 190 yds on only 18 carries to go with his two TD's. Braxton Conard had 143 yds passing and a TD pass to Toreano Barnes who caught 2 passes for 89 yds. JR SS Josh Lyons led the way on D for the Roadrunners with 10.5 tackles. For the Mustangs, JR RB Marquis Marshall had 152 yds on 22 carries. Lamberth had 75 yds rushing on 15 carries and a TD in addition to his TD pass. JR LB Sam Kempka led the Houston D with 8.5 tackles. Houston is now 6-1 (4-0) and will play Germantown next. Ridgeway is 4-3 (3-1) and will play Southiwnd next.


East 38 Melrose 29

East has a number of big time players in their history, including a number of them this year who have signed with major Division 1 schools. JR RB Antonio Clifton is looking to add his name to the list as well. Taking over for departed standout back Brian Kimbrow who is now at Vandy, Clifton rushed for 357 yds on 36 carries and scored 6 TD's to lead the Mustangs to the victory. One of the bright spots on the depleted Melrose squad is SO Jonathan Johnson. Johnson had 2 98 yd kickoff returns for TD's on the night. He now has four TD's on the year via return. East is now 4-3 (3-0) and will play White Station on Thursday, Oct.11. Melrose is 0-8 (0-4) and will play Whitehaven on Thursday, Oct. 11.


Germantown 27 Southwind 26

The other high profile matchup in 15-AAA came down to the wire and the Red Devils made the big play at the end to win the game. SR CB Caylor Weathers intercepted a Darius Henderson pass at the goal line in the final seconds to give Germantown the victory. This was one of many games that featured a delay because of the weather. The teams had a 75 minute delay early on but before that delay, the two teams were trading points left and right. The first quarter ended with Germantown ahead 20-12 and featured a number of big plays. After Justin Roberson put the Red Devils on the board with a 39 yd TD run, SR Jimmy Keys answered for the Jaguars with a 94 yd KR. Damon Cox returned the favor for Germantown with a 40 yd TD run and Southwind answered with a 26 yd pass from Henderson to Justin Kelly. In addition to his interception, Weathers also caught a 63 yd TD pass from Wesley Dacus. The Jaguars answered with 2 TD's in the 2nd quarter both from Henderson. The senior QB rushed for a TD and threw another TD pass to Keys to give Southwind the lead going into the half. Cox's second 40+ yd TD of the game gave Germantown the lead in the 3rd quarter. The Red Devils finished with 463 yds of total offense, 368 coming via the ground. Cox had 15 carries for 162 yds, Roberson 11 carries for 116 yds and Matt Hoover 12 carries for 86 yd via the Red Devils wishbone attack. Dacus was a very effective 3-6 passing for 95 yds and a TD with Weathers catching 2 of those for 86 yds and the score. Darius Henderson had 171 yds passing while accounting for the 3 scores (2 passing, 1 rushing) for the Jaguars. Germantown is 5-2 (4-0) and will play Houston next. Southwind is 5-2 (3-1) and will play Ridgeway next.

Westwood 14 Fairley 12

Another game with a big defensive play at the end. The Longhorns stopped Bulldog RB Dominque Smith at the Westwood 2 on the final play of the game to give them the victory. It was the first time in 15 years that Westwood has beaten Fairley. The Longhorns had jumped out to a 14-0 lead behind two Jerome Gilkey to Brandon Harrison TD passes. Fairley answered with two Thurston Rubin to Horris Carpenter TD passes but the Bulldogs were unable to convert their extra points and that was the difference in the game. Gilkey finished 9-13 for 143 yds with Harrison catching 3 of those for 88 yds to go with the two TD's. Tevin Reid had 102 yds rushing on just 12 carries for the Longhorns. Smith continued his excellent season, rushing for 129 yds on just 19 carries for the Bulldogs and he also passed for 47 yds. Rubin finished 4-8 passing for 67 yds while Carpenter's 2 catches totaled 62 yds, both for TD's. Westwood improves to 7-1 and will play Hamilton next on Oct. 19. Fairley is 5-3 and will play Hillcrest next.

Millington 10 Trezevant 6

A defensive struggle went the way of the Trojans on a cold, wet night in Millington. The game was stopped after a scoreless first quarter due to lightning and was resumed 40 minutes later. FR QB Eldon Tymbs hit JR WR Lakeron Garcia on a 60 yd TD pass and SR K Brendan VanEmelen added a 20 yd FG for Millington in the second quarter to stake them to the early lead. Trezevant answered in the fourth quarter with a 30 yd TD pass from Martavious Johnson to LeMarcus Stewart but the Bears couldn't get any closer. Antonio Webber finished with 102 yds rushing for the Trojans. Tymbs was 8-10 passing for 78 yds. SO QB Jordan Spencer finished with 60 yds rushing and 74 yds passing for the Bears. Both teams had less than 200 yds of total offense on the night. Millington is now 5-2 and will play Craigmont next. Trezevant is 5-2 and will play Kingsbury next.

Central 40 Manassas 24

Derrick Thomas got things started off with a bang and the Warriors never looked back. Thomas returned the opening kickoff of the game 83 yds for a TD as Central led 26-0 at the half. Thomas also caught a TD pass from Jeremy Buffington on the night as he was one of 3 Central players who accounted for 2 TD. Buffington ran for a TD in addition to his pass and RB Jason Stewart scored twice as well. Jordan Pegues and Melvin Bond each scored twice for the Tigers. Central is now 4-3 and will play Hamilton on Thursday, Oct. 11. Manassas is 4-3 and will play Douglass on Thursday, Oct. 11.

CBHS 17 ECS 0

Another game affected by the weather as this one was stopped at the half due to the conditions. The Purple Wave dominated in the first half, rushing for over 200 yds. Ramadi Warren had 9 carries for 91 yds and a TD while Kurtis Hicks had 7 carries for 71 yds and a TD. ECS QB Brent Rooker was a very efficient 7-9 passing but only for 35 yds. CBHS is now 6-1 and will play Briarcrest next while ECS is 3-4 and will play SBEC on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Dyer Co 7 Bolton 6

Bolton dominated the game in just about every way but on the scoreboard. The Wildcats got an Kal Granderson TD in the first quarter but failed to convert their extra point and it came back to haunt them as the Choctaws got the tying score in the 3rd quarter and the ensuing XP gave them the win. Bolton had 10 first downs to Dyer Co's 2 and 198 yds rushing to 53 in the game. SR RB Greg Williams had 103 yds rushing on just 13 carries and Brandon Henderson added 73 yds. Bolton is now 4-4 and will play Arlington on Oct. 19.

West Memphis 20 LR Central 7

The Blue Devils trailed 7-6 after three quarters before putting the game away in the fourth behind two Jarvis Cooper TD runs. West Memphis finished with 300 yds rushing on the night. Kendall Allen had 20 carries for 187 yds and Cooper finished with 84 yds on 21 carries to go with his two TD's. West Memphis is 4-2 (1-2) and will play Marion next.

White Station 20 Briarcrest 0

A high profile matchup on paper turned into a domination on the field as the Spartans gave the Saints their first loss of the year. This game was also affected by weather as there was a two hour delay because of the lightning and storms. White Station played extremely well on both sides of the ball. Their offense had over 300 yds of total offense. They were led by QB Cedrick Wilson and WR Donald Gray. Wilson had 1 TD rushing and was 8-12 passing for 205 yds and 2 TD's. Both of those went to Gray who caught 5 passes altogether for 175 yds and TD's of 67 and 71. The Spartan D was just as impressive holding the Saints to 71 yds of total offense. White Station is now 3-4 and will play East on Thursday, Oct. 11. Briarcrest is 7-1 and will play CBHS next.

Center Hill 21 Saltillo 20 (OT)

Another game decided by a missed XP went the way of the Mustangs as they got their second win of the year. QB Jacob Marsh's second TD pass of the night tied the game in OT and Boone Frederick's XP gave Center Hill the win. Marsh finished 12-19 for 160 yds to go with the two scores. Kaelin Thomas added 116 yds on just 16 carries while D'Marius Gillespie caught 6 passes for 88 yds. Center Hill is now 2-5 (1-2) and will play Clarksdale next.

USJ 49 FACS 6

The Bruins raced out to an early 28-0 lead after 1 and never looked back. USJ led 49-0 at the half en route to the win. SR RB Cody Stark had the only TD for the Crusaders with a 29 yd run. FACS is now 3-5 and will play Rossville Christian next on Oct. 19.

Hillcrest 44 Northside 6

The Vikings got help from their special teams and defense on the night to lead them to the win. SR Byron Logan returned a punt 34 yds for a score and a fumble 16 yds for a TD while SR Terrance Mitchell returned a fumble 30 yds for a score while the Hillcrest D held the Cougars to just 11 yds of total offense. SR Courtney Gaines had 109 yds rushing & 2 TD's for the Vikings as well. Hillcrest is now 4-3 and will play Fairley next while Northside is 0-8 and will play BTW next.

Collierville 41 Overton 19

It was the Clay Casey show for the Dragons over at Halle Stadium as he led them to the win. Casey had 6 TD's on the night (5 rushing, 1 passing) and the Dragons had almost 400 yds of total offense. The JR QB finished with 140 yds rushing on just 15 carries as the Dragons rushed for 311 yds on the night. Overton had opened the game with a 97 yd kickoff return for a TD by JR Timmarion Hill. They also got a 17 yd INT return for a TD by JR Aaron Johnson and a 69 yd TD pass from Deumaine Reeder to Kenneth Williams. Collierville is now 3-4 (1-3) and will play Kirby next while Overton is 1-6 (0-4) and will play Wooddale on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Brighton 30 Carver 0

The Cardinals got all of their points in the first quarter before the game was stopped due to the weather. Antonio Dickerson had 88 yds rushing in the game and two TD's and caught 2 passes for 66 yds and a TD to lead the way for Brighton. Brighton is now 4-3 and will play Hardin Co. next while Carver is 0-7 and will play Mitchell next.

Arlington 17 St. Benedict 14

SR WR Justin Boring has been doing it all year long for the Tigers and Friday night was no exception. Boring stepped in at QB and threw two TD passes of 35 and 42 yds to SR Omari Hampton to give Arlington the win. Boring ended up 6-10 for 87 yds passing and caught 3 passes for 43 yds while Hampton caught 8 passes on the night for 79 yds. Standout RB Jordan Wilkins had enough impressive performance for the Eagles in defeat. Wilkins had 29 carries for 183 yds and a score while catching 5 passes for 92 yds and a TD as well. QB Logan Schmitz was 13-20 for 152 yds as St. Benedict had almost 350 yds of total offense on the night. Arlington is now 6-2 and will play Bolton on Oct. 19. St. Benedict is now 3-3 and will play MUS next.

Southaven 14 Tupelo 10

The Chargers got two TD passes from JR QB Shea Chism and some help from their defense to get the win. Tupelo had the ball at the Southaven 15 with just 55 seconds left in the game and SR Cedric Thomas came up with the sack on 4th down to give the Chargers the victory. Southaven is now 5-2
(2-1) and will play Grenada next.

Olive Branch 31 DeSoto Central 28

The Conquistadors rebounded from their first loss of the year to get the win and it was another late comeback to get it done. Sam Craft hit Malik Mayweather with a TD pass on 4th and 14 in the last minute of the game to give Olive Branch the victory. Jap Payne had 122 yds rushing on 23 carries for the Conquistadors while Kendall Bunch had two TD's for the Jaguars. Olive Branch is now 6-1 (2-1) and will play Horn Lake next. DeSoto Central is 5-2 (1-2) and will play Columbus next.

Kingsbury 38 BTW 6

The Falcons won their 2nd in a row behind SO QB Eric Cole and an opportunistic defense. Cole had 3 TD passes on the night and the Kingsbury D picked off 3 passes and JR DE Romani Khulfan returned a fumble 53 yds for a TD. Two of those TD passes went to JR WR Jordan Brown who had 3 catches on the night for 86 yds. Kingsbury is now 2-6 and will play Trezevant on Thursday, Oct. 11 while BTW is 2-6 and will play Northside next.
