Game recaps for October 2,3,4

Just wanted to apologize for these being posted so late. I went out of town on Saturday to Kansas City for the Royals-Angels playoff game and didn't get back until late Monday.

Melrose 28 East 27

This was a back and forth affair on a Saturday afternoon at the Fairgrounds that wasn't decided until the final seconds and when the dust settled, the Mustangs had their first loss of the season. Melrose jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter before East responded with 27 unanswered points. The Golden Wildcats were not done and when Ke'Von Hall scored with 12 seconds left in the game & Malik Boyd split the uprights with the extra point, the comeback was complete. Hall finished with 13 carries for 89 yds in addition to the game winning touchdown. Melrose QB Cedrick Crawford was 19-36 for 217 yds and 2 touchdowns. WR Tony Pollard had 6 catches for 79 yds and a TD & WR DeQuan Dallas had 4 catches for 70 yds and a score for the Golden Wildcats. The area's leading wide receiver, Jonathan Johnson had a 17 yd TD run but was held in check by the East defense. East JR RB DeVante Turner was outstanding as usual with 25 carries for 144 yds and 2 TD's.

Houston 40 Southwind 0

The Mustangs ground game has been clicking all year long and Friday night was no exception as they remain unbeaten on the year. Colby Cartwright had 15 carries for only 68 yds but he scored four touchdowns in the game while fellow RB Chase Moss-Piorek added 110 yds and a TD on 11 carries for Houston. This is far from a one dimensional team as QB Jared Schmidt was 12-19 for 207 yds and a touchdown. Moss-Piorek also caught 5 passes for 112 yds for the Mustangs. Tyler Brewer had 7 carries for 90 yds to lead Southwind.

Trezevant 39 Craigmont 0

This was one of the marquee matchups of the evening with only one loss between the two teams going in. First place was at stake and the Bears emphatically showed why they plan on remaining the top dog in District 16-AA with the shutout win. The Trezevant defense has been its strong suit all year long and tonight was no exception. The Bears held one of the area's leading quarterbacks in Andrew McIntyre to 73 yds passing and picked him off twice while holding the Chiefs to only 64 yds on the ground. Trezevant's offense took care of business as well with over 400 yds of total offense. Jamal Jones led the way with 16 carries for 175 yds and a touchdown while George Monson rushed for 97 yds and 2 touchdowns on only 12 carries. Cordarrian Richardson added 84 yds and a score on just 14 carries.

Lewisburg 45 Lake Cormorant 34

Usually when opponents hold Lewisburg QB Jake Harville to 32 yds passing, it's a long night for the Patriots. After all, the area's leading passer came into the game with over 1500 yds and 18 touchdowns through 6 games. However, on this night, it was Harville's legs that did his talking for Lewisburg. The Patriots rushed for 524 yds in the game and averaged 8.3 yds everytime they ran the ball. Harville led the way with 23 carries for 222 yds and 2 TD's. Ben Hoffman added 13 carries for 114 yds and a TD, Colton Freeman was 13 for 89 and 2 TD's and Mark Smith had 13 carries for 81 yds. Gators QB Lake Cormorant Bailey Walker did all he could to have his team in position to win the game. Walker was 13-28 passing for 244 yds and 3 TD's, rushed 16 times for 135 yds (8.4/carry)and a TD and had 7 tackles on defense. SO WR Brandon Smith was his favorite target on the night with 5 catches for 152 yds and all three touchdowns. Defensively SO LaDarius Rule had 17 tackles while SR Markeith Joiner had 11 & SO Jumal Hawkins had 10.

CBHS 17 MUS 14

You don't have to say a lot when these two teams meet and on a night where yards and points were at a premium, it ended with a "WOW!" Jake Richards drilled a 42 yd FG on the final play of the game to give the Brothers the win. The game was a defensive struggle with special teams impacting the game greatly beside that final play. Each team returned a punt for a touchdown. Aaron Davis returned one 76 yds for CBHS and Colton Neel returned one 56 yds for the Owls. Neel added another touchdown as well as 66 yds rushing for MUS. Walker Grisanti led the Brothers with 80 yds on 16 carries.

Desoto Central 50 Horn Lake 28

Alan Lamar continues to show why he is one of the premier backs in the Shelby Metro area. Lamar, a junior, carried the rock 40 times on the evening and had 294 yds rushing and 3 touchdowns including a 97 yd score. QB Cameron Bowman was 12-18 for 156 yds and 3 TD's. Tre' Spann had 6 catches for 88 yds and a TD while Cortez Sisco only caught 3 passes but 2 of them were for touchdowns. QB Dalton Minton was 16-31 for 204 yds passing and 2 touchdowns to lead Horn Lake. Todd Wilson was his favorite target on the evening with 8 catches for 93 yds and both touchdowns. Undra Redmon & Will Anderson led the Eagles defense with 8 tackles each.

Arlington 38 Bolton 0

The Tigers broke open a close game at the half en route to their sixth win of the year. Arlington led 10-0 before scoring 21 points in the third quarter. SR RB Joseph Stevenson had a 89 yd run for a TD and finished with 114 yds on 6 carries while catching a TD pass as well in the quarter. Tevarious Foster rushed for 79 yds and 2 touchdowns on just 4 carries and QB Tate Kolwyck threw two touchdown passes as well to lead the Tigers. Arlington's defense held Bolton to 136 yds of total offense in the game.

Collierville 10 Kirby 7

The Dragons have hung their hat on their defense all year long and they needed that defense in this one to get the win to stay unbeaten in region play. The Collierville offense struggled to move the ball but they came up with the big play when they needed it most.  Parker Moss hit Drew Van de Vuurst with a 63 yd touchdown pass in the third quarter to give the Dragons the victory.  Ed Pomphrett had 76 yds rushing to lead Collierville. Kirby was led by RB Telvin Rucker who had 22 carries for 138 yds but the Cougars could not punch the ball into the end zone after the early first quarter touchdown.

Briarcrest 28 St Benedict 14

Six. Half a dozen. Half a foot. All of those apply. Another that it applied to Friday night was the number of turnovers that Briarcrest forced/St. Benedict committed and it led to a Saints victory. As usual, Hunter Hill led the way. Hill caught 3 touchdown passes from Ben Ellis of 35,50 and 32 yds. He also had a long punt return that led to another score and recovered a fumble as well. Ellis finished 9-14 for 173 yds to go along with the three touchdown passes. Harrison Eller recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass for the Saints as well. Eagles QB Mark Kovacs was 21-35 for 182 yds and 2 TD's. Tyler Currie was his favorite target on the evening with 12 catches for 123 yds and a score while Joey Magnifico scored his 11th touchdown of the season on a pass from Kovacs.

Southaven 14 Hernando 13

Everyone thought that this was going to be a offensive showcase but they were mistaken. It turned out to be a defensive battle as Southaven forced 4 Hernando turnovers on the night. The Tigers struck first with a Quentin Frazier touchdown with 4 minutes remaining in the first. Hernando then went for two and failed and that one point would be the difference in the game. Nic Kennedy answered for Southaven just 3 minutes later with a 14 yd TD pass to Antonio Reed. Will Craft gave Hernando the lead when he hooked up with OD Wooten on a 21 yd TD pass early in the third quarter. However, with three minutes left in the game, Nic Kennedy raced into the end zone on a 35 yd run & the ensuing extra point made sure that Southaven would improve to 2-0 in district play.

Millington 17 Kingsbury 0

The Trojans have been hit hard with injuries over the past couple of weeks and they struggled in this game before turning things over to a linebacker. Millington has lost starting RB sophomore Keno Taylor for the rest of the year with a torn MCL & ACL in the Bartlett game. One week later, they lost his replacement, sophomore D'Monte Kemp to a broken ankle. Starting QB Eldon Tyms was also injured in that game & is now out for the season with a torn ligament in his ankle. So the Trojans had a backfield of a sophomore quarterback and freshman running back making their first career starts. This game was 0-0 at the half due to three Millington turnovers and then Dante Pitts took over. Pitts is the starting linebacker and has in the past couple of seasons played some in the backfield but not much this year until Friday night. Pitts had 13 carries on the night for 188 yds and two touchdowns and the Falcons did not have an answer for him. FR RB Justin Coleman had 17 carries for 72 yds in his first varsity start. The Trojans defense was good all night long holding the Falcons to 133 yds of total offense and forcing 3 turnovers of their own.

Ridgeway 51 Germantown 7

The Roadrunners rebounded from the tough loss to Whitehaven to stay unbeaten in district play. 6 different Ridgeway players scored on the evening on the way to over 500 yds of total offense and they were led by RB Earl Harrison. Harrison had 17 carries on the night for 165 yds and 2 TD's. QB Braxton Conard was 12-19 for 231 yds and 2 TD's and rushed for a score as well. WR Katavious Taylor had 5 catches for 62 yds and a TD while Marquette Murdock caught 3 for 56 yds and a score. SO CB Joseph Newberry led a Ridgeway defense that forced four turnovers on the night. Newberry had 6 tackles, an interception and recovered a fumble.

Munford 27 Brighton 14

The Cougars clinched a playoff spot and continued their outstanding play with a rivalry game win over the Cardinals. Munford features a ball control wing T offense and they haven't thrown the ball much at all this year. QB Jacob Ross only threw the ball 4 times in this game but completed 2 of them for 107 yds and 2 TD's. Ross also rushed 20 times for 115 yyds and a score while FB David Simon carried 40 times for 116 yds and a touchdown as well. Their offense was a major weapon in this game as Brighton only ran 23 plays total in the game. Two of those plays were big as QB TJ Klutz threw touchdown passes of 81 to Devin Neal and 75 yds to Zach Camp.

ECS 35 FACS 13

The Eagles got this one started with a bang and by the time that it was over, clinched a playoff spot in the process. Sadler Goodwin returned the opening kickoff 70 yds for a touchdown and ECS never looked back as they had almost 400 yds of total offense on the night. Drew Croegaert only had 9 carries but rushed for 123 yds and he caught 3 passes for 68 yds as well. ECS continued its two quarterback system since starter Alex Smith went out and it continues to have great success. Keegan Westbrook was 6-12 for 121 yds and a TD while Riley Watkins was 6-7 for 63 yds and a score. FACS QB Bobby Downing was 11-20 for 120 yds with touchdown passes to Jack Evans (4 for 65) and Drew Rutland (3 for 20).

Bartlett 34 Cordova 29

This one featured some monster performances and also a crazy last minute of play. The Panthers had just held Cordova and had the ball on their own 6 with 56 seconds left and a 34-23 lead. Bartlett fumbled the ball and Cordova's Ahmad Richardson recovered and ran it into the end zone cutting the lead to 34-29. The 2 point conversion failed and then Cordova recovered an onside kick. The Wolves then drove down inside the 20 yd line and on 4th and 10 with 8 seconds left, Bartlett's Isaiah Norman picked off a pass at the goal line to give the Panthers their first win over the Wolves since 2005. The Panthers rushed for 341 yds in the game and were led by QB Jonathan Bowlan who had 22 carries for 154 yds and a TD while throwing a TD pass as well. Tyrone Cason added 17 carries for 122 yds and 2 touchdowns and Lamarcus Young had 11 carries for 65 yds and a score for Bartlett. Devin Coleman, Lavar Johnson, Kalan Miller & Jacob Jacques led the way for the Wolves. Coleman was 23-39 for 293 yds and a TD, Johnson rushed 22 times for 152 yds and 2 touchdowns while Miller caught 8 passes for 126 yds and Jacques caught 9 for 83.

Manassas 45 Westwood 0

Both sides of the ball were clicking for the Tigers as they remain near the top in District 16-AA. The Manassas defense held the Longhorns to 98 yds of total offense while totaling 466 yds of their own. QB James Smith had almost 300 yds of that himself with 8 rushes for 83 yds and 2 TD's & was 11-18 passing for 209 yds and 2 TD's. Kelvin Parker had 6 carries for 94 yds and a score while LiDarrion Seymour rushed for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass. Kyle Moten had 4 catches for 76 yds and Antonio Turner had 3 for 93 yds and a touchdown for Manassas.

Harding Academy 20 Northpoint Christian 13

This was a very evenly matched game and when it was said and done, the Lions had sole possession of second place and inched closer to a playoff spot behind a standout performance from their senior running back. Northpoint Christian led in first downs (20-17) while Harding Academy led in rushing (249-236) and passing (84-64). Carliss Settles scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter while rushing for 165 yds on 24 carries to propel the Lions to the victory. Nelson Fabrizius and Christian Saulsberry led the Trojans. Fabrizius rushed 24 times for 108 yds and was 7-9 passing for 64 while Saulsberry added 105 yds rushing on 19 carries.

Mitchell 35 Oakhaven 0

Another team with outstanding play on both sides of the ball is the Mitchell Tigers. They held Oakhaven to 78 yds of total offense and had 375 yds of their own. One of the better quarterbacks in the area is Mitchell's Tomadreus Trezevant and he was very good on this night. Trezevant completed 14 of 20 for 331 yds and 4 TD's. 4 different receivers had touchdown catches led by Jaylon Moore who had 5 catches for 184 yds and Nikolas Gray who had 3 for 96 yds. Randy Browley caught a touchdown pass and rushed for one as well.

Raleigh Egypt 41 MLK Prep 12

You can't stop the Boyland boys from Raleigh Egypt. You can only hope to contain them. That didn't happen on this night and the Pharoahs came away with the win. DaVonte Boyland carried the ball only 9 times but rushed for 135 yds and 3 TD's and he also returned a punt 25 yds for a score while DaShawn Boyland had 10 carries for 132 yds and 2 TD's. The Rams actually led in this one 6-0 when QB Elmer Macklin hit Tanerio Lauderdale with a 81 yd TD pass. Lauderdale finished with 5 catches for 140 yds in the game.

St. George's 48 Fayette Academy 14

Some nights things are just going your way. The Gryphons raced out to a 34-0 lead after one quarter and never looked back. SO RB Chase Hayden had a pretty good night's work just in that first quarter. Hayden carried the ball 6 times for 91 yds and 3 TD's while RB Clay Crenshaw had 9 carries for 115 yds and 2 TD's as well. The St. George's quarterbacks were almost perfect as well as three players combined to go 9-10 for 162 yds and a TD. WR Derek Dixon caught 2 passes for 94 yds and returned a 85 yd punt for a touchdown.

White Station 40 Overton 7

The Spartans played well in all three phases of the game to earn the win. The White Station offense had 379 total yards, the defense allowed only 91 yds and recorded a safety and special teams successfully recovered 4 onside kicks. RB KJay Johnson had 14 carries for 107 yds and 3 TD's. QB Burk Williams threw for 170 yds and 2 scores while Dillon Mitchell caught 9 passes for 115 yds and a TD.

Lausanne 37 Leake Co 13

The Lynx take to the road and get the victory behind play from older as well as younger players. Lausanne typically runs the ball but showed the home standing team from Mississippi that they could throw the ball as well. QB Spencer Mackey was 8-13 passing for 107 yds and 2 TD's. He also carried 8 times for 79 yds and a score. Freshman Chris Weatherspoon rushed 14 times for 108 yds and a TD and caught a TD pass as well while fellow freshman Nyle Love caught two touchdown passes as well as having 7 tackles to lead the defense.

Hillcrest 19 BTW 14

You know the saying-defense wins championships. If the Hillcrest Vikings are able to win the District 16-A championship (they are currently in first place), then they will look back to this game as they reason why. The Vikings had 4 interceptions on the night and a enormous stop from Tracy James III at the three yd line as time expired to get the win. James finished with 10 tackles and returned an interception 103 yds for a touchdown. Michael Roberts led the defense with 15 tackles and Cameron Sesley had 12. QB James Stittiams was 8-13 for 112 yds and a TD and rushed 9 times for 85 yds as well.
South Panola 46 Olive Branch 7

The Conquistadors were down 7-0 after one and then the wheels came off. South Panola scored 30 points in the second quarter and were aided by three Olive Branch turnovers. Dontavis Bruce rushed 9 times for 79 yds and caught 5 passes for 36 yds. LB Fred Walls led the defense with 13 tackles while Sanchez Blake & TJ Jallow each had 9.

New Hope 53 Center Hill 35

The Mustangs did all they could but were not able to come away with the victory. QB Danterius Ellington continues his exceptional play with a 27-38 performance for 359 yds and 4 TD's. RB Kaelin Thomas had 7 receptions for 81 yds and 2 TD's while rushing 12 times for 61 yds and a score. Jonathan Weeks had 6 catches for 52 yds and a TD, Kaleb Johnson had 5 catches for 87 yds and Jeremy Dodson had 5 for 59 yds to lead the Center Hill receivers. Tre'von Haralson led the defense with 11 tackles.

Tunica Academy 27 West Memphis Christian 6

The Black Knights threw 4 interceptions in the game and it was too much to overcome. Brice Fitzgerald had 5 catches for 72 yds and a TD, rushed 2 times for 36 yds and had 5 tackles. Jason Clifton led West Memphis Christian in rushing with 12 carries for 83 yds and Kentrell Green led the defense with 8 tackles.

Chester County 48 Fayette Ware 14

It's the little things that usually get you beat. The Wildcats were close in the yardage department as they were outgained 245-195 but they had 110 yds in penalties and gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown and fumbled the ball which was returned for a touchdown. There were some bright spots as Adonis Holloway rushed 5 times for 95 yds and a TD and Steafon McNeal caught a 29 yd TD pass and led the team with 4.5 tackles. Kentarious Raynor had 2 sacks as well for Fayette Ware.

USJ 42 Tipton Rosemark 21

The Rebels drop their first district game of the year but still remain in position to lock down one of the three playoff berths. QB AJ Hightower was 5-10 passing for 60 yds and a TD while rushing for 77 yds and a TD on only 3 carries. Logan Stewart had 19 carries for 79 yds and a TD and caught 3 passes for 49 yds and a TD.
