Recaps of games from September 19,20 and 21

MUS 26 South Panola 9

Not too many people gave the Owls a chance in this one. South Panola came into the game as the #1 team in the state of Mississippi. They led in just about every statistical category in the game but MUS kept the Tigers off the scoreboard when it mattered most and got the upset win. The defense and special teams came up big time and time again on this wet, rainy night. South Panola was 1 of 15 on third down conversions and the Owls were led by a trio of players with double digit tackles. SR LB Michael Fitzsimmons had 17, SR DL Malik Smith had 12 and SO LB Tim Hart had 11. SR K/P Gary Wunderlich kicked a 51 yd FG while averaging almost 50 yds a punt.  JR RB Colton Neel had 2 TD's to lead the offense.

Houston 17 Germantown 14

As far as rivalries go, this one is as good as any of them. Houston continues to get outstanding play from SR RB Malik Elion as they get the win to remain unbeaten at 5-0. Elion rushed for 197 yds and a TD and the Mustangs got a 42 yd TD pass from JR QB Jared Schmidt to JR WR Malik Schofield on a Hail Mary at the end of the first half. The defense was outstanding as well. SR LB Sam Kempka had 19 tackles (2 for loss), forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. SR LB Jack Williams had 9 tackles and SR DB Amanze Onwuka had 8 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. SR K CJ Stafford had a 47 YD FG to start the scoring for the Mustangs. Germantown was led by SR RB Anthony Quinn who did it on both sides of the ball. He had 82 yds rushing on 15 carries and 9 tackles (2 for loss) and forced a fumble. JR LB Jona Ligon had 9 tackles as well for the Red Devils.

Covington 36 Haywood Co 0

Sometimes your offense is clicking and sometimes it's not. That's when defense and special teams have to contribute even more. The Chargers got big time plays from both in the shutout win. JR RB/LB DaiQuon Norfolk picked off a pass and returned it 70 yds for a TD. Norfolk also had a 65 yd TD run and finished with 74 yds on just 6 carries. JR Keon Stowers returned a punt 55 yds for a score for the special teams unit. JR RB Aaron Foster had 94 yds on 10 carries and scored 2 TD's and the Covington defense held Haywood Co to only 123 yds in the game.

Whitehaven 52 Melrose 6

Both teams were 4-0 coming into the game and everyone wondered if Melrose was back. When JR standout Johnathan Johnson returned the opening kickoff back to the Whitehaven 14, the Golden Wildcats could sense that this might be the beginning of a special night. However, the defending 6A state champs and winners of 19 (now 20) in a row, said not so fast. The Tigers' defense did not allow Melrose to score and it was all over after that behind the Whitehaven running game. The Tigers rushed for 363 yds in the game and were led by SR RB's  Marshawn Jones and Ramadi Warren as well as JR QB Jordan Williams. Jones scored 3 times in the first half and finished with 133 yds on just 16 carries. Williams had 128 yds on 9 carries and a TD while Warren caried the ball 12 times for 96 yds and a TD. The Whitehaven defense did their part as well holding Melrose to -31 yds rushing and intercepting 4 passes, one of which was returned for a TD by SR LB Carlton Sims and JR RB Darrin Davis returned a kickoff 77 yds for a TD. SR QB LeEarl Patterson had 162 yds passing and a TD for Melrose. Johnson caught 6 balls for 106 yds and a 53 yd TD pass.

Lake Cormorant 34 Hernando 29

The Tigers had to be feeling pretty good in the this one. Their first play from scrimmage was a 74 yd TD run by JR RB Leon Cunningham, who ended up with 3 TD's for the game. They led 21-0 at the half and were up 29-14 with 8 minutes left in the game. It all came crashing down thanks to some outstanding play by Gators JR QB Bailey Walker. Walker threw for 2 TD passes in that time, one of which was 90 yds and finished things off by scoring his second rushing TD of the game with 44 seconds left in the game to give the Gators the win.

Millington 21 Bartlett 6

The Trojans' defense was up to the task Friday night as they won their 4th straight game. Millington only allowed the Panthers offense to cross the 50 yd line twice in the game and 113 yds of total offense while intercepting a pass and recovering 2 fumbles. SO QB Eldon Tyms continued his stellar play with 2 TD's passing and 1 rushing. Tyms has accounted for every touchdown (9-passing or 3-rushing, 1-fumble return) over the last 3 games.

ECS 41 Harding Academy 0

The Eagles shut down the Lions with a dominating defensive effort to stay unbeaten. ECS forced 4 turnovers (3 INT, 1 fumble) and held Harding Academy to -28 yds rushing and 26 yds of total offense in the game. The Chargers trailed early but it didn't take long for them to respond and get the win. Down 6-0, Southaven responded with 31 straight points and were led by SR QB Shea Chism. JR WR Terrence Davis had 6 catches for 114 yds and a TD and JR RB Tedrick Wiggins had 5 catches for 98 yds and a TD while rushing for 99 yds on just 11 carries.

Craigmont 32 Fairley 0

The Chiefs returned a good bit of talent from last year's team that won their first playoff game in school history but they did need to replace standout RB Walter Crutchfield. SR Michael Braden has let everybody know that he can handle the job with his standout play this year. Braden continued an outstanding year with 3 more TD's giving him 13 on the year through 5 games and finished the game with 168 yds on just 14 carries. JR QB Andrew McIntyre was a very effective 5-8 for 146 yds and 2 TD's-one to JR WR Kristian Wilkerson and one to SR WR Reginald Tuggle.

Ridgeway 56 Kirby 18

The Roadrunners broke out of the gates quickly as they raced to a 21-6 lead after 1 and never looked back. Ridgeway had almost 400 yds of total offense on the night and 8 different players scored touchdowns. The future continues to look bright as well as the sophomores and juniors are contributing on a weekly basis. JR QB Braxton Conard was 6-14 for 112 yds and 3 TD's. 2 of those TD's were caught by JR WR Cayman Gordon, the other by JR WR Katavious Taylor. Olive Branch 37 Rosa Fort 18

Neither team could stop the other as they combined for over 600 yds of total offense. But one big play on special teams and on defense swung the game in favor of the Conquistadors. Rosa Fort led 6-0 when JR Dontavis Bruce returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yds for a score. On the next possession, SR LB Devontae Davis picked off a pass (one of three INT's in the game) and returned it 4 yds for the score. Bruce also had 69 yds rushing on 4 carries SO RB Donovan Watkins had 65 yds on 4 carries and a TD. JR QB Ross Trail, who has just committed to the University of Louisville, was 8-14 for 102 yds and 2 TD's.

Central 22 East 16

A back and forth affair that had both teams getting safeties and the game winning touchdown scoring with .3 seconds left on the clock. East led 16-8 after 3 quarters before Central stormed back to get the win. JR QB Dedrick Thomas scored his third touchdown of the game from a yard out to give the Warriors the win. He was almost matched by East SO RB DeVante Turner who had 2 touchdowns of his own.

Arlington 42 Kingsbury 0

The Tigers were led by JR RB Joseph Stevenson and SR QB Hunter Sheffield as they scored early and often to get the win. Arlington led 21-0 after 1 and 42-0 at the half as they get back on the winning track. Stevenson finished with 13 carries for 136 yds and 2 TD's. Sheffield was 5-9 for 126 yds and 2 TD's. Sheffield 12 Westwood 6 (OT)

Each team had 1 big play in the game during regulation but the Knights SR QB Wade Martin saved the biggest play for overtime. Westwood had opened the scoring when Mississippi St. commitment Nikia Cathey caught a 71 yd TD pass from RiChard Broadnax to take the early leady. Sheffield answered in the 4th quarter when SR LB Tyler Sturdvant scooped up a fumble and returned it 64 yds for the tying score. Martin scored in overtime to give Sheffield the win.

DeSoto Central 21 CBHS 14

The way this one started off, you would have thought it was going to be a track meet. CBHS SR RB Connor Harris went 80 yds for a score on the first play of the game. After the two teams traded scores and were tied at 14, DeSoto Central SO RB Alan Lamar went 80 yds for a TD that proved to be the game winner. Harris added another TD for the Brothers and finished with 29 carries for 214 yds. He really had to bear the load of the offense when QB Breck Ruddick left in the first half with an injury. SO QB Trip Gibson came in and threw for 150 yds in his place. Lamar finished with 100 yds rushing on just 12 carries. The Purple Wave really hurt themselves in this one with 5 turnovers in the game including 3 in the red zone. They had the ball first and goal at the 1 but after 2 holding penalties, they lost a fumble and didn't get any points.

St. George's 48 Rossville Christian 20

The Gryphons came out in the third quarter and exploded for 21 points to put the game away and get their first real win of the year. (They had won an earlier game due to an ineligible player). SR QB Dean Brown had 2 TD passes and threw for 201 yds in the game. FR Ben Glass exploded for 120 yds on only 7 carries and 2 TD's.SR RB Scott McRae had a huge game for Rossville Christian with 11 carries for 167 yds and touchdowns of 57 and 77 yds.

Horn Lake 38 St. Benedict 31

When the fourth quarter started, no one in attendance could have predicted what they were about to see. It didn't matter whether you were a fan, player, coach or official. St. Benedict led 31-10 and most people thought for all intensive purposes that the game was over. Horn Lake responded with 28 points in the 4th quarter to get the win behind SO RB Chris Taylor. Taylor scored twice in the 4th quarter including the game winner and finished the night with 30 carries for 274 yds. JR QB Dalton Minton was 11-16 for 130 yds and 2 TD's. JR Joey Magnifico did it all for St. Benedict. He caught 3 passes for 66 yds, he returned a fumble 64 yds for a TD and intercepted a pass and returned it 26 yds for a TD.

Jackson Academy (MS) 28 Briarcrest 24

The Saints took the long road trip to Jackson, had to sit through a weather delay and came up short despite outgaining the host team. Briarcrest had over 300 yds of total offense but woes in the kicking game were the difference. Not only did the Saints miss 2 extra points but they also allowed a punt return for a TD. JR RB Robbie Arthur led the way with 111 yds rushing on just 17 carries and a TD. SR RB Hunter Bledsoe added a 54 yd TD run and JR QB Ben Ellis ran for a score and threw for one as well.

Manassas 42 Frayser 6

White Station 22 Hamilton 6

The Spartans have won 2 games in a row and most importantly, they are two district games as they try to rebound from the 0-3 start. White Station rushed for almost 300 yds in the game and were led by JR RB Kjay Johnson who finished with 116 yds on 23 carries. SR LB Petera Wilson returned a fumble 40 yds for a TD to lead the defense.

Cordova 7 Bolton 0

There was only one score in this one and it came from Cordova SR RB Charles Taylor. He broke loose for a 54 yd TD run to give the Wolves the win. Taylor finished with 123 yds on 28 carries. SR RB Darrien Nave had 111 yds on 25 carries for Bolton.

Trezevant 52 Southwind 12

One of the area's top defenses was on display and they lived up to the billing. The Bears gave up only 85 yds of total offense in the game and they got plenty of help from their offense. Trezevant only led 14-6 at the half before breaking the game open with a 22 point third quarter. The Bears had almost 400 yds of offense on the night and a big reason why was JR QB Jordan Spencer. Spencer only completed 5 passes on the night (5-7) but it was for a total of 144 yds and 3 TD's while rushing for 2 TD's as well.  JR WR Gabriel Scott was on the receiving end for all 3 touchdown passes. SR RB Marcus Bradley rushed for 104 yds on only 8 carries and JR RB George Monson added 2 TD's as well. One thing that Trezevant will have to work on is special teams. They allowed two kickoff returns for touchdowns to the Jaguars: SR Jimmy Keys (96) and SR Marcus Dean (86). It was Keys second kickoff return for a TD on the year.
