Recaps from August 28-29

Millington 34 Brighton 28 (OT)

A Tipton County shootout had to go to overtime to be decided and when the smoke cleared, the Trojans came away with the victory when SR Lakeron Garcia scored on a 10 yd run. Garcia had all five Millington TD's on the night (3 rushing, 2 receiving) and a 2 pt conversion. He finished with 21 carries for 137 yds and caught 2 passes for 56 yds. Brighton SR DL Charles Mosley was a force for the Cardinals. Mosley had 8 tackles and a sack.

Wooddale 19 Craigmont 14

The biggest story of the year so far has to be Wooddale. The Cardinals are off to a 2-0 start after only winning 2 games all of last year and it starts with the defense. They had 6 takeaways vs Bartlett in week 1 and followed that up with 5 more Friday night. SR QB Brandon Robinson was 7-14 for 133 yds and 3 TD's including the game winner to JR WR Walter Simmons with 7:45 left in the game. SR RB Michael Braden had an outstanding game for the Chiefs with 20 carries for 165 yds and 2 TD's.

Southaven 17 Trezevant 14

Trezevant will play anybody anywhere and Southaven beefed up its schedule to hopefully get it ready for the playoffs. What they both got was the atmosphere of a playoff type game that came down to the final seconds. Ryan Robbins kicked a 28 yd FG with 8 seconds left to give the Chargers the win. Both QB's were excellent on the night. Trezevant JR Jordan Spencer was 16-20 for 128 yds and a TD. Southaven SR Shea Chism was 14-16 for 212 yds and 2 TD's.  SO WR Tedrick Wiggins caught 4 of those passes for 117 yds including a 79 yd play to set up the winning FG.

Melrose 64 BTW 6

Are the Golden Wildcats back? The Orange Mound faithful sure hope that they are. Melrose is now 2-0 on the year after losing all 10 games last year. Both sides of the ball were impressive in the win vs the Warriors. The offense had over 400 yds of total offense with SR QB LeEarl Patterson leading the way. Patterson was 12-27 for 189 yds and 5 TD's. JR RB Kevon Hall had 9 carries for 110 yds and 2 TD's & junior standout Jonathan Johnson had 4 carries for 72 yds and 3 receptions for 59 yds and a TD. The defense gave up 68 yds of total offense in the game (96 passing, -28 rushing). There was a 68 yd pass in the first quarter which means from that point forward, the Golden Wildcat "D" gave up zero yds for the rest of the game.

DeSoto Central 37 Lewisburg 14

The Jaguars evened their record at 1-1 by racing out to a 28-0 lead in the first half and never looking back. SO QB Cameron Bowman was 11-17 for 143 yds and a TD and SR WR Steven Bradley caught 5 passes for 106 yds and a TD for the Jaguars. Lewisburg JR RB Colton Freeman rushed for 87 yds and 2 TD's.

ECS 36 St. Benedict 7

It was the Preston Parrish show as the Eagles start 2-0 on the year. Parrish, a SR QB, was 15-23 for 166 yds and 2 TD's and added a rushing TD as well. It was the second straight game that Parrish had 3 TD's and he now has 6 TD's (4 passing, 2 rushing) to start the year. SR RB Bryson Beaver rushed for 2 TD's and SR RB Cole Heotis caught both of those TD passes from Parrish to lead ECS. Heotis has 5 TD's in 2 games. Golden caught 3 of the TD passes on the night and now has 7 TD receptions on the year to go with over 300 yds.

CBHS 21 Germantown 7

They say that the biggest adjustment usually happens from week 1 to week 2 of the football season. Friday night, it was from the first offensive series of the game to the second for the Purple Wave. After allowing the Red Devils to go right down the field and score on their opening possession, the CBHS defense locked them down for the rest of the night. Germantown had 186 yds of total offense on the night but 80 came on that opening possession which ended when SR QB Wesley Dacus hit SR RB Anthony Quinn with a 32 yd TD pass. On the ensuing kickoff, SR RB Connor Harris answered with a 96 yd return for a TD. Harris would add another TD in the first quarter and finished the night with 160 yds rushing on 26 carries.

Murfreesboro Oakland 22 White Station 8

When the #2 team in the state comes to your place, you have to clicking on all cylinders to beat them. The Spartans were not clicking and were not able to come away with the win. White Station only trailed 14-8 at the half but had only 50 yds of total offense in the second half and only 149 for the game to go with 3 turnovers, 2 of which came in the 4th quarter. SO DE Isaiah Peetes scooped up a fumble and returned it 40 yds for the only White Station score.

Whitehaven 63 Fairley 8

Don't ever, ever wake up a sleeping Tiger, not to say that Whitehaven needed any extra motivation for this neighborhood game vs the Bulldogs. Someone apparently spray painted the "W" at midfield the night before the game and let's just say that the defending 6A state champs didn't take too kindly to that. The Tigers scored the first 33 points of the game in little more than a quarter of action and rolled to the win. Whitehaven had 442 yds rushing in the game and were led by the dynamic duo of SR RB's Marshawn Jones and Ramadi Warren. Jones had 6 carries for 155 yds and TD's of 56 and 67 yds. He now has 310 yds on just 18 carries (17.2/carry) and 3 TD's after 2 weeks. Warren had 10 carries for 217 yds and 4 TD's. The CBHS transfer has 321 yards on just 20 carries (16 yds/carry) and 5 TD's. JR QB Jordan Williams also had 2 TD passes for Whitehaven. Covington 44 Hillcrest 0

The Chargers are 2-0 on the year and used their traditional run based offense to lead the way. Johnston White has graduated but there are plenty of candidates to step in and do the job. Friday night it was Aaron Foster and DaiQuon Norfolk. Foster had 7 carries for 132 yds and 2 TD's (1 rushing, 1 receiving) and Norfolk had 7 carries for 59 yds and 2 TD's. FACS 40 Fayette Academy 0

Both sides of the ball played well to get the Crusaders off to a 2-0 start. The offense totaled over 400 yds on the night and were led by SR RB Kortney Morris, JR QB Bobby Downing and JR TE Drew Rutland. Morris was spectacular once again this week finishing with 183 yds on only 14 carries and TD's of 13,51 and 69. After the first two games of the season, Morris already has 359 yds rushing (8.9/carry) and 5 TD's. Downing was 8-10 for 105 yds and 2 TD's and for the season is 14 of 17 for 237 yds and 4 TD's Rutland caught both of those TD passes and 4 overall for 87 yds. The FACS defense held the Vikings to 66 yds of total offense.

Munford 17 Manassas 16

The Cougars built an early 17-0 lead but had to hold on to earn the first victory of the season. Munford QB Drew Drexler connected with Andrea Bell twice for touchdowns in the second quarter. SO RB LaDarrion Seymour finished with 102 yds rushing on 19 carries for Manassas.

Briarcrest 54 Carver 6

The Saints rebound from their heartbreaking OT loss to ECS with a balanced offensive attack led by JR QB Ben Ellis. SR RB Court Satterfield had 70 yds rushing on just 6 carries and scored twice, once on a 10 yd fumble return.

Houston 30 Bolton 7

The Mustangs trailed at the half but burst out of the gates en route to a 21 point third quarter and the victory. JR QB Jared Schimdt threw for 2 TD's, both to JR WR Chase Moss-Pioreck and all state senior kicker CJ Stafford had field goals of 23, 29 and 38 to lead Houston. SR Walker Lamberth had 85 yds rushing on 7 carries as well. SR RB Darien Nave had 13 carries for 122 yds and a TD for Bolton.

Jackson Academy (MS) 28 St. George's 7

Things were looking good at the start of the game for the Gryphons when SR QB Dean Brown hit FR WR Corey Jones with an 85 yd TD pass. But they never got any better and St. George's starts the year off 0-2. Brown finished 14-29 for 181 yds.
