Recaps from September 5-6

Southaven 45 CBHS 42

This is the early candidate for game of the year. A back and forth affair that wasn't settled until the final snap of the game. JR Ryan Robbins was the hero for the second straight week for the Chargers as his 37 yd FG gave Southaven the win. Robbins had kicked a FG with 8 seconds left last week in the 17-14 win over Trezevant. CBHS couldn't stop the Southaven passing attack and the Chargers couldn't stop the Purple Wave ground game. Charger SR QB Shea Chism was 30-46 for 401 yds and 5 TD's. His favorite targets on the night were JR WR's Terry Williams and Terrence Davis. Williams caught 11 passes on the night for 173 yds. Davis caught 6 passes for 149 yds and 4 TD's. Purple Wave SR QB Breck Ruddick led a ground game that rushed for 355 yds. Ruddick had 18 carries for 181 yds and 2 TD's and threw for a TD as well. SR RB Connor Harris had 22 carries for 146 yds and 2 TD's.

Ridgeway 49 Southwind 22

There were no off week issues for the Roadrunners as they hit the ground running as they jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter and cruised to the win. Ridgeway had 548 yds of total offense and were led by their talented trio of juniors. RB Earl Harrison had 306 yds rushing on 22 carries with 2 TD's. QB Braxton Conard was 11-20 for 188 yds and 3 TD's. TE Marquette Murdock caught 2 of those TD passes and had 3 catches overall for 61 yds. Southwind SO QB Darian Cole threw for 174 yds and 2 TD's. SR WR Marcus Dean had 3 catches for 84 yds and a TD while SR WR Jimmy Keys caught 3 passes for 80 yds and a TD. Keys also returned a kick 99 yds for a score.

Olive Branch 24 Charleston 13

The Conquistadors found themselves down 13-10 in the third before putting the game away with 14 straight points. JR RB Dontavis Bruce scored his second TD of the game on a 28 yd run and SR RB Marcus LeFlore broke a school record with a 95 yd TD run to finish the scoring. Bruce rushed for 120 yds on the night on only 7 carries while LeFlore finished with 99 yds on 7 carries. Olive Branch had trouble holding on to the football as they lost 4 fumbles on the night but their defense rose to the occasion. The Conquistador D allowed only 67 yds rushing (including just 4 yds in the first half) and 74 passing for the game.

FACS 39 Harding Academy 26

The Crusaders dug out of a major hole early in the third to stay unbeaten for the year. FACS trailed 26-7 and rattled off 33 straight points to get the comeback win. James Alexander's 62 yd fumble recovery for a TD kick started FACS but as usual, the Crusaders were led by SR RB Kortney Morris. Morris finished with 27 carries for 278 yds rushing and 2 TD's   JR QB Bobby Downing threw for a TD and rushed for a TD. The Lions had over 300 yds of offense as well. JR RB Carliss Settles rushed for 68 yds and a TD while FR RB Martavious Moore had 67 yds and a score while JR Will Jones intercepted a pass and returned it 34 yds for a TD.

Covington 41 Jackson North Side 19

The Chargers are picking up where they left off as they try to return to the state title game once again. Johnston White may have graduated but Covington is showing that they have capable replacments as they  rushed for over 300 yds in the game. JR RB Aaron Foster had 23 carries for 192 yds and 2 TD's to lead the way. SR QB T.A. Watson only completed 2 passes on the night but they went for 66 yds and 2 TD's. The Charger defense was up to the task as well. JNS only had 9 yds rushing on the night and had 112 yds passing but 53 came on one play.

Houston 35 Wooddale 18

Both teams were 2-0 coming into this one and the Mustangs raced out to an early lead to remain unbeaten. JR QB Jared Schmidt was 12-23 passing for 195 yds and 2 TD's and added a rushing touchdown to lead Houston. SR RB Malik Elion added 78 yds rushing and caught a 54 yd TD pass. SR TE Gavin McCrary caught 2 TD passes in the game and Walter Simmons picked off a pass and returned it 25 yds for a score. Wooddale SR QB Brandon Robinson threw for 222 yds and a TD and rushed for a TD as well.

East 32 Overton 0

The Mustangs D came up big for the second straight week and earned their second straight shutout. East allowed only 73 yds rushing and 46 yds passing while intercepting 5 passes on the night. Rico Hall picked off two of those and returned both for touchdowns in the 4th quarter to give the Mustangs some breathing room.

Whitehaven 27 White Station 19

The Tigers were in danger of seeing their 17 game winning streak come to an end but rallied for the win behind SR RB Ramadi Warren. Whitehaven trailed 17-6 in the third quarter before Warren took over. His 55 yd TD run and ensuing 2-pt conversion cut the lead to 17-14. Following a safety that made it 19-14, Warren scored on a 7 yd run to give the Tigers the lead. He added his 3rd TD of the night with 29 seconds left following a White Station fumble to ice the game.  Warren finished with 157 yds on just 17 carries. JR QB Jordan Williams went 7-12 for 164 yds and a TD. SO WR Kerrick Jones caught 6 of those for 135 yds and the score.

Briarcrest 40 St. George's 16

I hope that head coach Major Wright had the cameras rolling for whatever he said to his team at halftime so he will be able to use it again in the future. The Saints trailed 16-13 at the half before erupting for 27 unanswered points to win going away. They were led by SO RB Rashad Muhammad who accounted for all 20 pts in the 3rd quarter with 3 TD runs. Muhammad finished with 113 yds on only 19 carries. JR QB Ben Ellis had 130 yds passing and 2 TD's with both of those going to SR TE Gus Gran. The Gryphons had almost 300 yds of total offense but just could not punch it into the end zone in the second half. SR QB Dean Brown and JR WR McCarthy Robinson hooked up for 2 touchdowns in the first half for St. George's.

Collierville 14 Germantown 7

As far as rivalries go, this one is as good as any of them and on this night, it went the Dragons' way. In the 4th quarter, QB Alex Hicks threw his 2nd TD pass of the night to give Collierville the win. Hicks threw for 120 yds on the night and the Dragons D turned back the Red Devils each time in front of a raucous crowd at Collierville.

Manassas 20 Sheffield 14

This game was tied at halftime and there was only one score in the second half but what a big score it was. SR Marico Williams scooped a fumble in the third quarter and took it 72 yds for the score and the game winner as Manassas got the win. It was the second straight defensive touchdown for the Tigers as SR Melvin Polk recovered a fumble for a score in the first half to tie the game at 14. Sheffield had over 300 yds of total offense in the game but had trouble holding on to the ball and it cost them in the end. SR QB Vincent Downhart did all he could, rushing for 75 yds on 10 carries and a TD while throwing for 86 yds and a TD on 5-9 passing. SR WR Patrick Hill caught 4 passes for 101 yds and a TD for the Knights.

Millington 31 Cordova 14

SO QB Eldon Tyms led the way with 4 TD's (2 rushing, 2 passing) and the Trojan defense absolutely shut the door on the Wolves in the second half to get the win. Tyms finished with 99 yds rushing and 102 passing to lead the Trojans. The Millington defense came up big with 4 takeaways and held Cordova to 24 yds rushing and 27 yds passing after halftime. JR LB Patrick Macon recovered 2 fumbles and had 12 tackles for Millington. JR DE Tyree Daniels had 11 tackles to lead Cordova. This game was also marred by the yellow flag as the two teams combined for 357 yds in penalties.

Pulaski Academy 37 MUS 29

The Bruins had a reputation coming into the game as a team with a wide open offense and always trying onside kickoffs. They lived up to that reputation and more and the Owls matched them for about 2 and a half quarters. But following a Colton Neel TD that tied the game at 22, Pulaski Academy scored on a 81 yd TD pass on the next play from scrimmage to retake the lead. Then on the 2nd play of the 4th quarter (on 4th down), the Bruins connected on a 57 yd TD pass to go ahead by 15. The Bruins finished with 497 yds passing on the night. The Owls were successful on the ground as JR RB Darien Bradburn had 124 yds rushing on just 18 carries. Neel, a JR RB, added 71 yds and had 2 TD's in the game and was the second leading tackler in the game with 8. SR WR Devin Perry caught 2 TD passes on the night. The leading tackler for MUS was SO LB Tim Hart with 12.

Bolton 40 Kingsbury 18.

This was a tight game with 8 minutes left until the Wildcats exploded for 3 TD's to pull away and get the win. The score was 21-18 Bolton when JR RB Devante Williams scored the second of his 4 TD's and 3 of them came in the last 8 minutes of the game. Williams was part of a Wildcat rushing attack that had 410 yds rushing on the night. Williams had 13 carries for 153 yds while SR RB Darien Nave had 21 carries for 211 yds and a TD. SR RB Jordan Brown continues to produce for the Falcons. He rushed for 60 yds on just 8 carries and a TD and caught 4 passes for 35 yds while JR QB Eric Cole threw for 202 yds and a score as well.

Craigmont 46 Raleigh Egypt 0

The Chiefs rebounded from last week's tough loss to Wooddale by scoring early and often in this neighborhood rivalry. Craigmont led 38-0 at the half on the way to the win. JR QB Andrew McIntyre had 3 TD passes and SR RB Michael Braden scored 3 rushing TD's to lead the Chiefs. McIntyre was 5-7 passing for 109 yds. JR WR Kristian Wilkerson caught 2 of those TD passes for 54 yds and Braden finished with 63 yds on 8 carries.

Trezevant 36 Westwood 8

The Bears trailed 8-6 after one and may have been experiencing some lingering side effects from last week's loss in the final seconds to Southaven. But they cleared the cobwebs and scored 30 straight points to earn the win. Trezevant churned out over 450 yds in total offense and were led by a number of players. JR RB Jamal Jones had 16 carries for 128 yds and a TD while catching a TD pass as well. SR RB Marcus Bradley had 12 carries for 101 yds and a TD. JR QB Jordan Spencer ran for a TD and threw a TD pass while backup QB SR Martavious Johnson threw a TD pass. JR WR Gabriel Scott caught 2 passes for 70 yds and a score and JR RB George Monson rushed for 76 yds on 8 carries. Westwood standout Nikia Cathey, a Mississippi State commitment, accounted for the Longhorns touchdown, catching a 34 yd pass from QB Ri'Chard Broadnax.

Arlington 39 Bartlett 0

The Tigers defense was the story in the this one as they held the Panthers to 60 yds of total offense, blocked 2 kicks and created 4 turnovers in the game. Arlington SR QB Hunter Sheffield followed up his record setting performance from last week with another solid game in leading his team to victory. Sheffield was 17-25 for 215 yds and 2 TD and rushed for a TD and JR K Cameron Durley had 3 FG as well.

Tipton Rosemark 28 Fayette Academy 0

The Rebels got the win by having a balanced offense and SR RB Zach Dickson. Tipton Rosemark had 161 yds rushing and 141 yds passing and Dickson finished with 123 yds on just 13 carries and 3 TD's. SR QB Austin Chambers was 8-14 passing for 141 yds and a TD.

Mitchell 48 KIPP 0

The Tigers got their first win of the year and both sides of the ball stepped up. The Mitchell D held the Phoenix to -11 yards of total offense and the Mitchell offense had 329 yds of total offense of their own. JR QB Tomadreus Trezevant was 6-8 passing for 182 yds and 4 TD's. SR WR Dejuan McQuarters caught 3 passes for 102 yds and a TD and JR RB Randy Browley had 7 carries for 51 yds and 2 TD's.

Lafayette 21 DeSoto Central 6

The Jaguars knew that they were facing a tough opponent in the Commodores and it was even tougher with a number of players out due to injury. DeSoto Central put a good fight but just didn't have enough firepower in the end. SR RB/LB Mike McDonald had the only TD on the night and led the team in tackles with 10 along with SR LB Andrew Marsiglia.

Marion 28 Wynne 27

The Patriots hung on and got the win in their season opener. JR RB Dereon Thomas led the way with 16 carries for 220 yds and 3 TD's while SR RB Ralph Smith added 17 carries for 115 yds and a score. Defensively, SR LB Dustin Bolton led the team with 13 tackles and he forced a fumble.

Center Hill 23 Byhalia 6

The Mustangs got their first win of the season behind a balanced offense. JR RB Kaelin Thomas led the way with 19 carries for 134 yds and a TD while SO QB Dan Ellington had 49 yds rushing and was 12-20 passing for 165 yds and a TD. SR WR Dee Gillespie, the Louisiana-Monroe commitment, caught 6 passes for 77 yds and a TD and SR K Carlis Moore added 3 FG's in the win.

West Memphis Christian 36 Lee Academy 8

The Black Knights got their first win of the season behind an outstanding performance from SO QB Trevor Pagan. Pagan was 6-8 passing for 305 yds and 4 TD's. SR WR Ricky Patterson caught 3 of those passes for 140 yds and 2 TD's and also had an interception. Defensively, West Memphis Christian was led by JR LB Taylor Turnage who had 8 tackles.
