Recaps from September 12-13 (updated)

Melrose 42 Kirby 20

The Golden Wildcats only led 22-20 at the half before breaking the game open down the stretch to continue their remarkable turnaround from last year. Melrose started the season with a 16 game losing streak and they are trying to get the program back to where it used to be. A 4-0 start in 2013 has the team headed in the right direction. Both sides of the ball were getting it done Friday night vs the Cougars. The Golden Wildcats defense held Kirby to 3 first downs and 87 yds of total offense for the game and JR KeVon Hall picked off a pass and returned it 36 yds for a TD. Melrose had almost 500 yds of total offense and they were led by their standout trio, SR QB LeEarl Patterson, SR ATH Cornelius Sturghill and JR ATH Johnathan Johnson. Patterson finished the night 19-34 for 358 yds and 4 TD passes. Sturghill caught 7 of those passes for 122 yds and 2 TD's while Johnson caught 6 passes for 142 yds and a TD. Johnson also had 76 yds rushing on 5 carries and a TD.

Trezevant 40 Fairley 0

The Bears raced out to an early lead, scoring all of their points in the first half and JR RB Jamal Jones was a big reason why. Jones scored on runs of 79 and 60 yds in the first quarter and finished his night with 202 yds on just 8 carries in one half of football. JR QB Jordan Spencer only completed 2 passes all night but both went for TD's. SR DB Marcus Bradley scooped up a fumble and returned it 45 yds for a score to lead the defense which held the Bulldogs to 5 first downs and 88 yds of total offense for the game.

Collierville 50 Cordova 16

It's not often that you get outgained in total yards by a wide margin yet outscore your opponent very decisively but that's exactly what happened in Collierville Friday night. The Dragons were outgained in total yards 448-218 but won the game going away. JR WR Drew Van De Vuurst got things started by returning the opening kickoff 90 yds for a TD, his first of three scores on the night. JR QB Alex Hicks only completed 6 passes on the night for 127 yds but 4 of them went for touchdowns. Special teams had a hand in the scoring as well. In addition to the kickoff return for a touchdown, JR LB Jonquail Carrothers recovered a blocked punt for a score. Carrothers also caught one of the TD passes from Hicks. Cordova SR RB Charles Taylor had 21 carries for 103 yds and a TD. JR RB Lavar Johnson added 86 yds on only 8 carries. SR QB Jireh Fordham threw for 194 yds on the night. SR WR Marquis Ward caught 7 passes for 116 yds and SR WR Xavier Johnson caught 8 for 66 yds.

Starkville 34 Southaven 14

This game was tied at 14 at the half but the Chargers just couldn't put any points on the board in the second half and lose their first game of the year. SR QB Shea Chism had another good night with 298 yds passing but finished with only 1 score and 2 interceptions.

CBHS 44 West Memphis 13

When you only have possession of the ball for a total of 18 minutes in a game, things aren't usually going your way. Fortunately for the Brothers, this was their night. The passing game was finally a factor in the game. SR QB Breck Ruddick was a perfect 7-7 for 213 yds and a TD. JR WR Warner Hill caught 3 passes for 124 yds and the TD in addition to making 8 tackles on the other side of the ball. The ground game continues to be effective as SR Connor Harris rushed for 98 yds and 3 scores. Even though the CBHS defense was on the field quite a bit, it was more of a bend but don't break effort. SR DB Greg Sanders led the way with 14 tackles while JR LB's Christopher Varnado & Hayden Ferrari and JR DB Walker Grisanti each had 9 to lead a defense that had an interception and recovered two fumbles.

FACS 47 Tipton Rosemark 14

The Crusaders used their 1-2 punch of SR RB Kortney Morris and JR QB Bobby Downing to race out to a 27-0 lead after a quarter and cruised to the victory. Morris scored 3 of his 4 TD's in the game which included a 55 yd punt return in that quarter. Morris finished with 177 yds rushing on just 17 carries. Downing threw 2 TD passes in the first half and finished the night 8-16 for 130 yds. JR WR Christopher Collins caught 5 passes for 85 yds and a score for FACS. JR Logan Stewart had both scores for Tipton Rosemark, one of them coming on a 77 yd kickoff return.

Millington 39 Munford 0

Are we seeing a star in the making in North Shelby County? SO QB Eldon Tyms produced big time for the second straight week as the Trojans dominated the annual M & M Bowl. One week after Tyms accounted for all four scores in their win vs Cordova, he accounted for all 6 touchdowns vs Munford. Tyms broke school records for passing yds in a game with 273 and passing touchdowns in a game with 5. Even when Tyms made a mistake by throwing an interception, he was right there to catch the fumble in mid air when the Munford defender lost it and returned it 30 yds for a score. Tyms spread the ball around by hitting 7 different receivers on the night including SR WR Chris Sanders for a 82 yd TD pass on the first play of the game. JR WR Damarius Curry had 4 catches on the night for 84 yds and 2 TD's. The Trojan defense was stellar in pitching the shutout and held the Cougars to 51 yds of total offense including -34 rushing.

Brighton 31 Covington 7

Another rivalry game is the annual tilt between the Cardinals and the Chargers in Tipton County. Covington got on the board first but this game was all Brighton after that. Both sides of the ball were up to the task for the Cardinals. They held the vaunted Covington rushing attack to just 1 yd on the night and only 4 first downs total. On the flip side, Brighton's offense put up 459 yds of total offense. The Cardinals had a pair of 100 yd rushers: SR's Blue Currie and Zach Ballard. Currie had 18 carries for 166 yds and 1 TD and caught a TD pass as well. Ballard had 21 carries for 113 yds and a score. SR QB Colton Hathcock was 16-25 for 182 yds and 2 scores. For the Chargers, SR QB T.A. Watson was 6-9 passing for 118 yds and a TD.

Houston 42 Dickson Co 35

The Mustangs are now 4-0 on the year for first year head coach Will Hudgens but it wasn't easy. SR RB Malik Elion had a huge game and his 2nd TD of the night with only 56 seconds remaining gave Houston the win. Elion had 21 carries for 328 yds to go with the two scores. JR QB Jared Schmidt was 10-19 passing for 118 yds and 2 TD passes while rushing for 107 yds on 11 carries and 2 TD's as well. SR DB Corey Williams led the way defensively with 14 tackles. SR LB Sam Kempka had 9 tackles and picked off a pass while SR DB Amanze Onwuka had 9 tackles and forced a fumble.

White Station 7 East 6

A hard hitting defensive struggle between both teams ended up being decided by an extra point. All of the scoring in this one was done in the first half. SR LB Darius Hurt returned a blocked punt 9 yards for the score for the Mustangs but their 2 pt conversion failed and it was huge. SR Eldridge Thompson scored for the Spartans and the ensuing extra point by SR K West Wiggins provided the margin of victory. White Station only had 84 yds of total offense on the night and East finished with 135. Spartan QB Cedric Wilson, Jr, left the game with an injury.

Mitchell 51 BTW 0

The Tigers evened their record at 2-2 with dominating performance on both sides of the ball. The Tigers D gave up only 21 total yds of offense and SR LB Alphonso Parker scooped up a fumble and returned 20 yds for a score & SR DB Calvin Martin picked off a pass and returned it 35 yds for a score. Offensively JR QB Tomadreus Trezevant was outstanding. Trezevant was 8-12 for 118 yds and 3 TD's. 2 of those touchdowns went to SR WR Calvin Scott for a total of 63 yds. SO QB Jonathan Robinson had almost the perfect half in leading Hamilton to the win. Robinson was 9-10 passing for 106 yds and a TD and he rushed for a TD as well. SO DB Derico Benton got things started for the Wildcats with he picked off a pass and returned it 38 yds for a score and SR LB Dwight Woods finished things off when he returned a fumble 44 yds for a score.

Germantown 28 Briarcrest 27

The Red Devils offense finally woke up in this back and forth affair and they held on for the win. SR QB Wesley Dacus only completed 5 passes of the night (8 attempts) but they totaled 151 yds and 2 TD's including the game winner to SO RB Cooper Foreman. Germantown's rushing attack was shut down by the Saints, forcing the Red Devils to change their game plan. SR RB Anthony Quinn had 2 TD's, one of those a 90 yd kickoff return that started a run of 21 straight Germantown points after trailing 13-0. The Saints had over 300 yds of total offense. JR QB Ben Ellis was 10-18 for 158 yds and 2 scores while SR RB Court Satterfield had 94 yds rushing on 15 carries.

DeSoto Central 22 Lake Cormorant 15 (updated)

There was defense at the start and defense at the end with two completely different results for the teams. SR DB Lakendrick Doss picked off a pass and returned it 45 yds for a TD to get Lake Cormorant on the board first. The Gators were going in for the tying score with just seconds remaining when they fumbled inside the 10 yd line and the Jaguars' Tre Spann recovered to give DeSoto Central the win. Lake Cormorant was led defensively by SR LB Marico Paige and SR DB Deyaryea Gillis with 8 tackles each.

Lausanne 48 Fayette Academy 24

The Lynx were down after the first quarter, 17-7 but came roaring back with a 27 point second quarter to earn their second win of the season. Anyone that follows football in this area knows if you are facing a Ken Netherland team, you're going to see a whole lot of running the football. This night was no exception as Lausanne rushed for 412 yds on the night and had 3 different players rush for over 100 yds. SR RB Michael Goodrich had 18 carries for 141 yds and 4 TD's. The Wildcats had over 200 yds rushing in the contest with SR Darian Nave carrying the ball 19 times for 82 yds and a TD while SO RB LaZachary Rhodes rushed for 76 yds on 8 carries.

MUS 30 Liberty 6

JR RB Colton Neel was big for the Owls as they even their record at 2-2. Neel rushed for 78 yds on 17 carries and had 3 touchdowns to lead the way. MUS may have found their QB as well. They have been rotating four different players in, looking for someone to step up and make up some plays. SR QB James Sexton did just that on Friday night. Sexton was 14-17 passing for 130 yds and a TD. SR WR Devin Perry caught 9 passes for 114 yds and a TD. The Owls D was up to the task as well. They blocked a kick,  recovered a fumble and had a sack that led to a safety. SO LB Tim Hart had another huge night with 13 tackles.

Overton 27 Wooddale 7

The Overton defense did its job and came up with 2 huge plays that led to the victory. Hernando 26 Cleveland 20 (updated)
