Recaps from the first weekend of action August 23-24

Whitehaven 20 Mitchell 6

The defending 6A state champs picked up where they left off and it didn't take long at all. Marshawn Jones had a 77 yd run for a TD and Ramadi Warren followed that up with a 76 yd run for a TD. Both came during the first quarter and Da' Haven never looked back. Jones finished with 12 carries for 165 yds and Warren had 10 carries for 104 yds. The Whitehaven defense was also very impressive holding Mitchell to 116 yds of total offense. 


Olive Branch 38 Ridgeway 22

Plenty of points in this one as well as some outstanding performances as the two teams combined for 60 points and 826 yds. RB Dontavis Bruce led the Conquistadors with 157 yards rushing on just 12 carries and a TD while catching 7 passes for 117 yds and a TD. QB Ross Trail ran for 2 scores and was 14-24 for 217 yds and a TD as well. For the Roadrunners, QB Braxton Conard was 20-47 for 228 yds and 2 TD's.  TE Marquette Murdock had 6 receptions for 116 yds and one of those TD's.


ECS 33 Briarcrest 32 (OT)

Another game that featured plenty of offense with 65 points and 799 yds from the two teams ended up being decided by special teams. ECS escaped with the victory after a missed extra point in OT. The Eagles had a chance to win it in regulation but the Saints' Nick Pope blocked a 27 yd FG attempt to send the game to extra time. SR RB Cole Heotis was a standout for ECS, scoring 3 TD's while rushing for 170 yds on 21 carries. QB Preston Parrish was 13-22 for 186 yds and 2 TD's while running for another as well. Briarcrest QB Ben Ellis did just fine in his first varsity start going 8-14 for 105 yds and 2 TD's in addition to rushing for 103 yds on 11 carries and 2 scores. The Saints' Rashad Muhammad also went over the 100 yd mark with 22 carries for 125 yds.

East 32 Southwind 19

The Mustangs fell behind early 13-0 before coming back for the win. East was led by RB's DeVante Turner and Antonio Clifton. Turner had 10 carries for 122 yds and 2 TD's including a 64 yd score that put the Mustangs on the board for the first time in the game. Clifton had 15 carries for 109 yds and a 31 yd TD that put East ahead to stay. Southwind QB Darian Cole accounted for all 3 TD's. Cole was 16-26 for 187 yds and 2 TD's (24,26-both to WR Chris Gatewood) and rushed for another.

Collierville 49 Bolton 17

The Dragons had over 500 yds of total offense and a number of players all contributed in the win. JR QB Alex Hicks, making his first start, was 11-21 for 244 yds and 2 TD's and added a rushing TD as well. WR Drew Van De Vuurst caught 2 passes for 65 yds and a TD and had 86 yds rushing on just 5 carries with 2 of those going for scores. Austin Hall caught 2 passes for 64 yds and a TD and rushed for a TD. Bolton had almost 400 yds of total offense but could not convert on their opportunities to score points. QB Austin Clark threw for 163 yds and a TD. WR Devante Williams caught 3 passes for 108 yds and a TD.

Saltillo 24 DeSoto Central 21 (OT)

The Jaguars have been making some noise with their performance in the various 7 on 7 camps this summer but came up just a little short in their season opener. DeSoto Central had over 400 yds of total offense on the night led by RB Alan Lamar, who had 26 carries for 167 yds and 2 TD's. WR Mark Partee started things off with a bang with a 94 yd TD pass for Cameron Bowman. Bowman, making his first varsity start at QB, was 18-28 for 176 yds. Defensively, Chris Jones and Cortez Sisco had 7 tackles each.

Germantown 13 Millington 3

Defense and penalties were the main topics of discussion in this one as the Red Devils got the win. They held the Trojans to 167 yds of offense and JR Markiese Thomas recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD that put the game away. Millington struggled to get things going all night and had 17 penalties in the game. They played well defensively led by JR LB Patrick Macon with 15 tackles and SO FS Dante Pitts with 9.

Brentwood Academy 36 MUS 7

The Eagles made sure that there wouldn't be a repeat of last year's unbelievable comeback in the playoff game between the two schools. Brentwood Academy had over 200 yds of offense in the first quarter along and raced out to a 16-0 lead en route to the win. The Eagles defense was so dominating that the Owls didn't score until late in the game. JR RB's Darien Bradburn and Chris Davis had nice games. Bradburn finished with 21 carries for 89 yds while Davis had 4 carries for 67 yds including a 39 yd TD. Defensively, SO LB Tim Hart led the way with 12 tackles including 2 for loss and SO DB Thomas Pickens added 11 stops.

Kingsbury 28 St. Benedict 21

The Falcons got their first win of the season by playing well in all three phases of the game-offense, defense and special teams. Kingsbury trailed 21-6 at the half but made some adjustments in a big way as they pounced on the Eagles for 22 points in the third quarter. Defensively, they held St. Benedict to just 148 yds of total offense. The Falcons amassed 387 yds of total offense on their own. RB Jordan Brown had 16 carries for 158 yds but his 70 yd punt return for a TD gave Kingsbury the lead for good.

FACS 29 Jackson Christian 3

Kortney Morris, Christopher Collins and Bobby Downing all led the way for the Crusaders in the season opening win. Morris had 26 carries for 176 yds and 2 TD's. Collins caught 4 passes for 76 yds and 2 TD's and Downing was almost perfect on the night as he finished 6-7 for 122 yds and those 2 TD's.

Arlington 24 Kirby 19

It's always the little things that win you ballgames. When you look at the numbers for these 2 teams on the night, they are very similar. Arlington had 212 yds of total offense and Kirby had 213. The difference in this game was Drew Irwin stepping in front of a pass and returning it 30 yds for the TD to provided the margin of victory for the Tigers. QB Hunter Sheffield was 15-29 for 135 yds but it was his 31 yd reception of a pass from Jonathan Bowlan that put the Tigers on the board first. Kirby QB Cedric Crawford had a TD rushing and passing as he finished 12-24 for 128 yds.

Lake Cormorant 42 Senatobia 14

The Gators rolled to the victory behind QB Bailey Walker and WR Ryan Golden. Walker was outstanding on the night, 12-21 for 241 yds and 4 TD's. Golden caught 3 of those TD passes and finished with 6 catches for 161 yds and he also returned a kick for a TD. LB Leo Johnson led the defense with 6 tackles.

Wooddale 9 Bartlett 7

The Cardinals got the win by forcing 6 Panther turnovers on the night. Malik Huntsman's 1 yd TD in the fourth quarter gave Wooddale the win. Elijah Williams led the way for Wooddale with 12 carries for 72 yds. Braylon Porter led Bartlett with 10 carries for 82 yds and a TD.

Brighton 59 Carver 6

The Cardinals scored early and often with 35 points in the first quarter en route to the win. Blue Curry got things started with a 99 yd kickoff return for a TD on the opening play of the game and Brighton never looked back. Curry rushed for 51 yds on 5 carries and added another TD and. Zack Ballard had 7 carries for 99 yds and a TD as well. QB Colton Hathcock was 8-13 for 120 yds and 2 TD's. Nick Easley returned an interception 30 yds for a score as the Cardinals defense held the Cobras to just 51 yds of total offense. Kevin Shaw did return a fumble 40 yds for the only Carver touchdown.

MBA 24 CBHS 10

The Purple Wave stormed back from a 9-0 deficit to take the lead following Dominic Volpe's 66 yd blocked FG return. But MBA answered with 15 straight points to win the game. CBHS got 66 yds rushing from Connor Harris and 93 yds passing from Breck Ruddick but it wasn't enough to propel them to the victory.

Rossville Christian 37 West Memphis Christian 0

The Wolves' defense made a statement by only allowing 48 yds of total offense to the Black Knights and a 21 point second quarter put the game away. QB Tinsley Heston rushed for 95 yds and a TD on only 14 carries and threw a TD pass and Brian Noverese had 12 carries for 81 yds and 2 TD's as well.

Southaven 42 Clarksdale 7

QB Shea Chism showed why the Chargers are definitely one of the teams to be reckoned with this year. Chism had 5 TD's to lead Southaven to the season opening win. He connected with Tedrick Wiggins on TD's of 25 and 65 yds, Rickey May on TD's of 48 and 55 yds and Terence Davis, Jr of 10 yds.  The 5 TD's tied a single game school record.

Lausanne 47 Fayette Ware 28

The Lynx got their first varsity win ever by knocking off the Wildcats. Lausanne amassed over 4oo yds rushing on the night. Spencer Mackey led the way with 143 yds on just 9 carries and a TD while Tanner Fuquay had 59 yds rushing and 3 TD's on the night. Fayette Ware was led by Raidarious Anderson and Greg Goforth. Anderson scored 4 TD's while Goforth threw for 247 yds and 2 TD's

Craigmont 53 Douglass 12

The Chiefs might be dropping down in classification to 4A but they showed they have enough firepower for any level. Craigmont was up 28-0 after 1 and 41-0 at the half as they cruised to the win. JR QB Andrew McIntyre was almost perfect, going 5-6 for 109 yds and 3 TD's.  RB Michael Braden rushed for 55 yds on 6 carries and had 2 TD's while WR Kristian Wilkerson caught a 50 yd TD pass and returned an interception 53 yds for a score. Douglass QB Quintin Richmond ran for a TD and threw for a TD for the Red Devils.

Manassas 28 Raleigh Egypt 0

The Tigers' defense was quite impressive in the win over the Pharoahs, holding them to just 2 first downs and 25 yds of total offense in the game. The Manassas rushing attack was just as impressive as they had 339 yds for the game. Marico Williams led the way with 122 yds on just 14 carries and a TD. LaDarrion Seymour added 95 yds and a TD while Rayford Albright scored 2 TD's of his own including a 32 yd punt return.

Trezevant 42 Frayser 0

The Bears were more than up to the task in this rivalry game as they shut out the Rams. JR QB Jordan Spencer was 5-10 for 117 yds and 3 TD's. JR RB Jamal Jones had 6 carries for 132 yds and 2 TD's and George Monson scored twice as well.

Halls 38 Fayette Academy 13

The Vikings fell behind early, trailing 19-0 after 1 and could not get back into the game. QB Austin Johnson threw for 97 yds, 82 of those to WR Brock Currey. Johnson also had 50 yds rushing and a TD in the game.
SR Allen Tapp led the way on defense with 8 tackles.

South Panola 42 White Station 27

Special teams and defense put the Spartans in a hole early and they could not recover in the season opening loss against one of the best in the country. White Station trailed 35-7 at the half as they gave up an 84 yd punt return for a TD, a 40 yd INT return for a TD and South Panola recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD. QB Cedrick Wilson, Jr accounted for all of the offense by throwing 3 TD passes and rushing for another.
