Recaps from November 16

Whitehaven 52 Germantown 7

The Tigers rolled and rolled early as they scored 3 touchdowns on their first 10 plays from scrimmage and never looked back. Mr. Football finalist Mark Dodson had 165 yds rushing on just 14 carries and scored 4 TD's on the night (3 rushing & 1 receiving). Patrick Smith had 2 TD's rushing and was 7-12 passing for 113 yds and 2 TD's while Darius Sims returned a punt 63 yds for a score as well. The Tigers advance to their third straight semifinal where they will take on Mt. Juliet for the second straight year. The Tigers went on the road last year and demolished the Golden Bears last year 44-10 and this year it will be Thanksgiving at Da' Haven in the rematch.

MUS 46 Brentwood Academy 45

This was one of those games that they will be talking about for a long long time. Gary Wunderlich's 38 yd FG with 26 seconds remaining gave the Owls the improbable victory. At one point in the first half, MUS trailed 23-0 due to 5 turnovers. They were down 38-23 in the third quarter before Mr. Football finalist Jordan Rodgers and Devin Perry took over. They hooked up for 3 TD's including a school record 96 yd pass that cut the lead to 45-43. The Owls went for 2 and were denied and following a three and out by BA, they drove down the field and set up Wunderlich for the game winning FG. Rodgers finished 17 for 23 for 409 yds passing to go with the 3 TD's and had 2 TD's rushing as well. Perry had 7 catches on the night for 254 yds and the 3 TD's.

ECS 27 St. George's 20 (2 OT)

The curse (or blessing) of the rematch is alive and well. As we talked about in our game previews, last year St. George's lost to USJ during the regular season only to defeat the Bruins for the state championship. This year ECS lost to Fayette Academy during the regular season and defeated the Vikings in the second round of the playoffs. The Eagles also lost to the Gryphons in their season opener and returned the favor and earned a trip to the state title game in the process. Alex Armfield intercepted a pass in the second overtime to give the Eagles the win after Mr. Football finalist Brent Rooker scored on ECS's possession to give them the lead. Rooker had 80 yds rushing to go with his TD and had 147 yds passing and a TD as well. Chandler Loy led the Gryphons 158 yds rushing and a TD

The game was not without some controversy. The Gryphons had scored to supposedly take the lead in the 3rd quarter on a Dylan Young to Blake Carruth TD pass. However, immediately after the play, ECS head coach Geoff Walters called timeout and told the officials that there was an ineligible receiver on the play. 10 minutes later following a lengthy discussion by the officials, they took away the St. George's touchdown.

Covington 23 Trezevant 18

The Chargers remained unbeaten and advanced to their second straight semifinal game but this game wasn't decided until the final seconds. We talked about how this could be a defensive struggle in our previews but we did not expect the best offensive player on the field to be making the plays. Mr. Football finalist Johnston White had an interception in the final minutes of the game and tipped the pass that was intercepted in the final moments to give the Chargers the win. Trezevant held White in check for the majority of the game. White came into the game with 4,500 career yards and was only 2 yds shy of setting the all time school record held by Lareko Boykin. Those yards have basically come in the last two years as White had exploded onto the scene. He was held to 71 yds in the game and just 1 TD but was able to make plays on the other side of the ball to help his team to the victory. The Bears trailed at the half 21-0 before they were able to generate some offense in the second half. LeMarcus Stewart, who had 4 TD's the week before vs Mitchell, added 2 more in this game including a 74 yd punt return.

Madison Central 27 Olive Branch 6

The quest for a second consecutive state title ends in Madison as the Conquistadors just can't generate enough offense on the night. Josh Cooley had hit University of Memphis commitment Dontrell Nelson with a 68 yd TD pass to cut the lead to 13-6 with just under 11 minutes in the game. Olive Branch attempted an onside kick immediately after the TD but Madison Central recovered and marched right down the field to score and put the game away.

Jackson North Side 45  Ridgeway 42

We told you that this game was going to be a track meet and that the last team with the ball could win the game. That statement was almost true. In a game that went back and forth all night long, Ridgeway had an opportunity to win it in the final seconds but could not convert on fourth down and the Indians will advance to the semifinals. Orlando Johnson capped a very impressive senior season with 271 yds rushing.

Bentonville 42 West Memphis 0

For the second straight year the Blue Devils had their season end in the playoffs at the hands of theTigers.
West Memphis turned the ball over twice in their first 5 plays of the game and they could not recover as Bentonville only had 16 offensive snaps in the half yet led 28-0. West Memphis RB/LB Jarvis Cooper, the state's #2 prospect for next year, finished with 112 yds rushing.
