Recaps for November 9

Whitehaven 54 Southwind 0

The Tigers continue to steamroll everyone in their path as they attempt to return to their second consecutive state championship game. The Whitehaven defense racked up their 5th shutout of the season and held the explosive Southwind offense to just 56 yds of total offense while picking off 4 passes. The Tigers have allowed 7 points or less in 10 of their 12 games and have only allowed 20 points total in their last 7 games. Mr. Football finalist Mark Dodson continues to have an amazing year. Dodson had 18 carries in the game for 250 yds and touchdowns of 85,14 and 38 and had another 80 yd TD run called back due to penalty. Backup SO QB Jordan Williams came into the game and had a solid performance. Williams was 8-12 passing for 122 yds and 3 TD's. Gerald Perry had 4 catches for 78 yds and 2 TD's and Marshawn Jones had 2 TD's rushing as well.

Germantown 24 Millington 23 (OT)

This was a wild one that was decided in overtime by an extra point. Chris Little's kick gave the Red Devils the win and send them to a quarterfinal matchup with Whitehaven.  Germantown fell behind early with a fumble on their 1st play from scrimmage. The Trojans converted 3 plays later to take the early lead and threatened to blow the game wide open when a second fumble on the ensuing possession was picked up by Myron Threlkeld and returned 62 yds to deep in Germantown territory. But Millington could not get any points on the possession missing a 23 yd FG. Germantown then took over the remainder of the first half behind RB Justin Roberson. Roberson scored twice in a 17 point second quarter and finished the first half with 95 yds on just 9 carries. As dominant as the Red Devils were in that quarter, the Trojans dominated the third quarter in the same manner. Millington RB Antonio Webber scored the first of his 2 TD's in the game and had 63 yards rushing in that quarter. Travis Bell's 30 yd FG tied it with 747 left in the game for the Trojans. Millington scored first in OT with Webber's second TD and he finished with 136 yds rushing. But the extra point was blocked and set the stage for Damon Cox's 1 yd run on 4th down to tie it and Little's game winning kick. Roberson finished with 110 yds rushing in the game and Cox had 93 as well.

Olive Branch 53 Warren Central 21

I was just wondering the other day if there had ever been a player get the "trifecta" in a football game. By that I mean, throw a TD pass, run for a TD and catch a TD pass. Somebody must have been listening because that's exactly what Sam Craft did for the Conquistadors in their opening round playoff win. Craft did it all and more with 3 TD passes, rushing for a score and catching 2 TD passes from Josh Cooley as Olive Branch scored early and often. Craft finished 7-11 passing for 175 yds, had 56 yds rushing on 9 carries and caught 3 balls for 98 yds as the Conquistadors racked up 559 yds of total offense. Byrekus Payne had 94 yds rushing and a TD. Josh Cooley came in and was a perfect 5-5 for 128 yds and 2 TD's. Olive Branch advances to face Madison Central.

West Memphis 43 Rogers Heritage 36

The accolades for JR RB/LB Jarvis Cooper usually come on the defensive side of the ball. After all, he is the #2 rated prospect in the state of Arkansas for the class of 2014. However, Cooper can take care of business on offense as well as his 1 yd run with 51 seconds left in the game gave the Blue Devils the win and sent them on to the next round to face Bentonville. Cooper finished with 163 yds rushing on 21 carries to go with the TD and he caught a TD pass as well. Teammate Kendell Allen was dominant on the ground as well, rushing for 200 yds on 23 carries and 2 TD's and he returned a kickoff 96 yds for a score. QB Kody Frasure chipped in with 2 TD passes as West Memphis racked up 480 yds of total offense on the night, 412 coming on the ground. They needed every bit of them and more as they were actually down at one point in the game 29-14 before roaring back.

Covington 42 Sheffield 6

Mr. Football finalist Johnston White continued to put up just crazy video game like numbers for the second week in a row as the Chargers remained unbeaten and advanced to a quarterfinal matchup with Trezevant. White had 315 yds on 29 carries and 6 TD's for a Covington team that had 489 yds rushing on the night. White now has 38 TD's on the year. It is the 8th time in the last nine games that the Chargers have scored at least 42 points. QB Brandon Leachman had 112 yds passing in the game  & Terrance Dixon capped a fantastic year by scoring his 25th TD of the season.

Trezevant 36 Mitchell 6

The Bears defense has been the focal point of the team this season with four straight shutouts coming into the game and five overall. They didn't get the shutout in this game but they were dominant in advancing to the quarterfinals to face Covington. Trezevant forced four turnovers in the game, one of them an interception that SR LeMarcus Stewart returned for a TD and they had a safety as well as they held the Tigers to just 2 FG's in the game. Stewart had 4 TD's on the night as he and SO QB Jordan Spencer hooked up for 3 TD passes. Spencer was 5-6 passing on the night for 95 yds and the three scores.

MUS 20 Baylor 14

Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships. You hear it all the time. Both sides of the ball did their part Friday night at MUS as the Owls advanced to a semifinal round matchup with Brentwood Academy. The MUS offense racked up almost 400 yds of total offense and the Owls defense held Baylor to their lowest point total of the year. Shane Tucker had 176 yds rushing on only 23 carries and Mr. Football finalist Jordan Rodgers was a very efficient 20-28 for 210 yds and 2 TD's for the offense. Mr. Football finalist Peyton Klawinski had 12 tackles and a sack and Matt Bolton had 10 tackles to lead the defense.

Brentwood Academy 44 Briarcrest 17

The Saints made a trip up to Nashville but couldn't slow down the Eagles offense and it made for a long ride home. Briarcrest was led by QB BJ Nagle who rushed for a TD and was 13-26 passing for 215 yds. Gus Gran caught 5 of those passes for 120 yds. Jay Moore added a rushing TD in addition to his 72 yds.

Ridgeway 49 Craigmont 28

These two teams met in the playoffs last year in a shootout that went the way of the Roadrunners in a 49-42 win and this game started out just as crazy before Ridgeway pulled away in the second half. 49 points were scored in the first half with 2 TD's in the last 11 seconds of the second quarter. There were plenty of highlights in this one. Ridgeway SO QB Braxton Conard was 9-19 passing for 202 yds and 2 TD's and had 3 TD's rushing. Both of the touchdown passes were to Toreano Barnes who caught 4 passes for 124 yds. Orlando Johnson had 167 yds rushing, Cortez Payton had a 70 yd kickoff return for TD and Brian Thomas returned an interception 25 yds for a score for the Roadrunners. Craigmont SO QB Andrew McIntyre was 10-19 passing for 251 yds and 2 TD's. Damecio Ewing had a huge night for the Chiefs catching 4 passes for 119 yds and a TD and returning a kick 76 yds for a score. Khristian Wilkerson caught 5 passes for 127 yds and a TD while Walter Crutchfield rushed for 129 yds and a TD.

Jackson North Side 41 Hamilton 6

The Wildcats had no answer for the Indians and saw their season come to an end. Coach Jerome Griffin has his program in the right direction. After ending a 20 game losing streak last season, Hamilton has also made the playoffs each of the last 2 years after not making the postseason the previous 15. Here is a link to the game story from the Jackson Sun.

ECS 42 Fayette Academy 0

It was a one point game just a couple of weeks ago that the Vikings won over the Eagles and you always make adjustments from one game to the next. Whether it was execution or adjustments or both, ECS stormed out of the starting gate and never looked back as they advanced to the semifinals to take on St. George's. The Eagles led 35-0 at the half behind Mr.Football finalists Brent Rooker and Walker Jones. Rooker scored the first three TD's of the game (2 passing, 1 rushing) and Jones scored 2 of his 3 TD's on the night in that first half. Rooker finished with 84 yds rushing on just 7 carries and was 14-17 for 168 yds passing as ECS had 444 yds of total offense on the night. The defense was pretty good too holding Fayette Academy to -8 yds passing in the game and keeping Marcus Miller in check. Miller had only 58 yds rushing in the game after rushing for 189 yds and 3 TD's in the regular season meeting.

St. George's 31 FRA 7

Any time you have to go on the road in the playoffs is tough and what you want to do is try to take the crowd out of the game whenever possible. So it would be an understatement to say how huge it was for Chandler Loy to go 65 yds on the first play of the game to get the Gryphons going. St. George's did it on both sides of the ball by totaling over 300 yds on offense and holding FRA to 161 yds. Loy added another 43 yd TD run and finished with 203 yds rushing on 22 carries. The Gryphons advance to the semifinals where they will hit the road again to take on ECS in a rematch of the second game of the season which was won by St. George's 10-6.

MBA 36 CBHS 21

The Purple Wave led this game 21-20 after 3 quarters but could not close out the Big Red as they score 16 points in the 4th quarter to get the win. RB Ramadi Warren did his part with 160 yds rushing on 25 carries and 3 TD's but CBHS couldn't slow down the MBA offense which had over 350 yds on the night.

Knoxville Webb 49 Harding Academy 21

The Lions made the long trek over to Knoxville to take on a Webb team that has been state champions two of the last three years but found that they couldn't stop Mr. Football finalist Todd Kelly. Kelly had 6 TD's on the night. Here is a link to the game story from the Knoxville News Sentinel:

Peabody 40 Westwood 12

Jerome Gilkey had 2 TD passes on the night, one to Nikia Cathey and one to Brandon Harrison but the Longhorns could not stop Peabody and saw their postseason end in the second round. Here is a link to the game story from the Jackson Sun:

Clinton 31 Southaven 7

The Chargers were on the road to start the 2012 playoffs but it ended up being a short stay as they were unable to generate any offense. Southaven's only score came on a Shea Chism to Hunter Bull TD pass of 45 yds in the third quarter which closed the gap to 11-7. But on the very next possession Clinton scored on a 70 yd run to take the lead back to 11 and that was as close as the Chargers were able to get.

Ridgeland 13 Center Hill 6

These two teams met last year in the playoffs with Ridgeland winning 10-9. Center Hill came up a little short again this year but it was a hard fought game. The Mustangs could only muster field goals of 22 and 27 yards in another defensive struggle with the Titans. Center Hill got 145 yds passing from Jacob Marsh and rushed for 104 yds as a team but could not find their way into the end zone. The Mustangs defense played well, only allowing Ridgeland a total of 283 yds on the night and forcing three fumbles but they couldn't recover any of them. Senior Jaquarius Wilson led the way with 18 tackles on the night. Senior Hunter Ivie had 13 and junior Cole Paulino had 10

Itawamba 30 Lewisburg 3

One week before, the Patriots had went on the road in the school's first ever playoff game and defeated Cleveland 28-23. They were able to play in front of the home crowd Friday but knew they were going to have their hands full with an undefeated Itawamba team. The game was tied at 3 until midway through the 3rd quarter when the Indians took the lead for good. Lewisburg just could not get the offense going and their season ends in the second round of the playoffs.

Lake Hamilton 37 Marion 0

This was the second time this season that the two teams have met. Both times the result was the same. Earlier in the season at Marion, Lake Hamilton won the game 31-16. This time the game was at Lake Hamilton and the Patriots had no answers on the night losing 37-0 and ending their season.
