Area players named as finalists for Mr. Football Award by TSSAA
Congrats to Chase Hayden (St. George's), Joshua McMillon (Whitehaven), Colton Neel (MUS) and Drew Richmond (MUS) for being named as finalists for the prestigious Mr. Football award by the TSSAA. Here is the press release:
A committee of statewide sports writers selected winners based on performance in the 2014 regular season. Academics and character were also taken into consideration. High school head coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists.
“We are obviously excited and appreciative about being involved with the Tennessee Titans for the eighth consecutive year,” stated Bernard Childress, Executive Director of the TSSAA. “They have helped make the recognition of the 33 student-athletes, their families, and schools possible. The sponsorship of the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards and numerous contributions to high schools across the state since the team moved to Tennessee have meant a great deal to the member schools of the TSSAA.”
This is the 30th year that the Mr. Football Awards have been presented to Tennessee’s best high school football players. Plaques will be presented to 22 other finalists.
Approximately 600 people, including the honorees, their families, coaches, school administrators and members of the media from all parts of the state, are expected to attend the 2014 luncheon.

Hermitage, Tennessee, November 12, 2014 – The Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards will be presented to the top 10 backs and linemen in five classifications of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association on Monday, December 1, 2014, at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center in Murfreesboro. For the thirteenth consecutive year, the top kicker in the state will be recognized with a Mr. Football Award. There are three finalists in this category, regardless of their school’s classification.Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center, Murfreesboro
11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M.

Individual stats as of November 5
Here are some stats for the area schools in a number of different categories. If you don't see your school represented, there are one of two reasons why: 1) They didn't meet the cutoff point for a specific category or 2) We don't have any information from your school. Contact the person that does stats for your school and have them e-mail them to us at shelbymetrosports@gmail.com. All we want to do is spotlight the young men who are playing high school football in the Shelby Metro area and we appreciate any help that we can get to make that happen.

Numerous area individuals and schools recognized as A.F. Bridges awards winners
The A.F. Bridges Awards program was expanded 15 years ago to include awards for School System Administrator of the Year, Principal of the Year, Athletic Director of the Year, Female Coach of the Year, Male Coach of the Year, Official of the Year, and Contributor of the Year. The awards recognize again this year 63 individuals from across our state that represent what’s best in high school athletics. Recognition was made in the above mentioned categories in each of the nine athletic districts in our state.
Nominations were made by a Citizenship/Sportsmanship Committee in each athletic district and the final selection was made by a State Selection Committee.
Bernard Childress, Executive Director of the TSSAA stated, “Being recognized for one of these awards as a school or individual should be seen as one of the highest honors in high school athletics in our state. Those who receive the awards truly reflect what high school athletics should be about, and that’s good sportsmanship and good citizenship.”
All of these awards will be presented at the three Regional Meetings held at the following dates and sites (members of the media are welcome to attend):
Monday, November 3 – Hardin Valley Academy, 1 p.m. ET

A.F. Bridges Divisional Awards and State Award of Excellence
The A.F. Bridges Divisional Awards are given to schools that have had no reported unsportsmanlike conduct incidents during the previous school year and have displayed an overall positive effort to teach, expect, and demand a positive atmosphere of sportsmanship at their particular contests.
The schools that received this prestigious award were nominated by local officials associations, other member schools, and the Tennessee Observers Program for Sports (TOPS).
Of the 27 divisional recipients, one school in each class will receive Tennessee’s top award for overall outstanding effort in its division. One of the three schools in each classification will be presented the A.F. Bridges State Award of Excellence shortly after the divisional awards are handed out. This is the highest award that can be bestowed upon a school to honor its overall efforts to promote citizenship and sportsmanship at school, and at athletic contests.
The A.F. Bridges Award is given in honor of the TSSAA’s first executive secretary. He served as executive secretary from 1946 until his retirement in 1972. Under his leadership, athletics in the state of Tennessee reached a level of excellence and competence that earned the respect of all people. Mr. Bridges was a person of high principles who displayed firmness and fairness, as well as the high ideals of ethics and integrity, as he and many other school people established the foundation of TSSAA across our state.
