Recaps from the first week of action August 22 & 23

There were a number of standout performances and high scoring affairs in the opening week of the season and here are the recaps. If your team is not listed here, it's because we didn't get any information about the game. Teams can e-mail stats to shelbymetrosports@gmail.com

Ridgeway 49 Olive Branch 34

The two teams combined for nearly 1,000 yds of total offense and 83 points but when the dust settled, the Roadrunners had a big season opening win. RB Earl Harrison led the way for Ridgeway with 233 yds on 26 carries and 3 TD's. QB Braxton Conard was 10-17 for 283 yds and 3 TD's. WR Katavious Taylor caught 3 passes for 147 yds and 2 of those scores while TE Marquette Murdock had the other TD to go along with 3 catches for 83 yds as the Roadrunners had 617 yds of total offense. Olive Branch had impressive performances of their own from RB/WR Dontavis Bruce and QB Mario Nolan-Dillard. Bruce caught 4 passes for 79 yds and 2 TD's while rushing for 53 yds on 7 carries and a TD. Nolan-Dillard rushed for 88 yds on 12 carries and a TD while going 8-20 for 143 yds passing and 2 TD's. Jeremy Neal picked off a pass and returned 47 yds for a score for the Conquistadors as well.


Lewisburg 35 John F Kennedy 0

This one was all over at the half as the Patriots scored all of their points and QB Jake Harville was a big reason why. Harville was 12-17 for 198 yds and 4 TD's as he looks to build off an impressive sophomore season last year in which he threw for over 1,600 yds and 15 TD's while rushing for almost 600 yds and 6 scores. 8 different receivers caught passes in the game led by Benji Galbraith with 3 catches for 77 yds and a TD.

ECS 42 Briarcrest 28

Playing his first game since the 2012 season, ECS QB Alex Smith had 5 TD's on the night in leading the Eagles to the win. Smith had to sit out last year after transferring from Fayette Academy and didn't show any signs of rust in directing the ECS offense to over 400 yds on the night. Smith was 13-20 passing for 246 yds and 3 TD's while rushing for 2 TD's and 79 yds on 18 carries. RB Drew Croegart had a solid night with 63 yds rushing on 8 carries and caught 5 passes for 58 yds. WR Stephen Oliver caught 2 passes for 110 yds and 2 TD's. Saints QB Ben Ellis did everything he could to keep his team in the game. Ellis was 12-18 for 225 yds and 2 TD's while rushing for 58 yds and a TD. WR Hunter Hill had 5 catches for 123 yds while WR Ryan Avant caught 4 passes for 83 yds and a TD.

Trezevant 56 MLK Prep 0

The Bears have their fair share of weapons but they hang their hat on defense and it was on full display in the season opener. LB Nicholas Clay returned a fumble 30 yds for a score as the Trezevant "D" held their opponent to -86 yds of total offense in the game. WR Gabriel Scott had 2 TD's on the night as 5 different players scored including George Monson's 60 yd kick return for a score. Jurarian Malone had 6 2-pt conversions on the night for the Bears as well.

Millington 28 Germantown 0

There were a number of players that contributed to the Trojans shutout win over the Red Devils. JR QB Eldon Tyms was 11-17 passing for 169 yds and a TD and rushed for 2 TD's as well. SO RB Keno Taylor rushed for 160 yds on 17 carries. JR Kip Fleming caught 3 passes for 117 yds including a 78 yd TD and SR WR Artavious Thomas returned a punt 65 yds for a TD.

Horn Lake 34 Center Hill 24

SR QB Dalton Minton led a balanced attack and the Eagles to the win. Minton threw for 139 yds and 2 TD's and Horn Lake rushed for 133 yds and 2 TD's as well. SO RB Peyton Logan had 53 yds rushing on only 8 carries and a score. SR WR Todd Wilson had 7 catches for 52 yds and a score while SR WR Jordan Black caught 6 passes for 45 yds and a score. Center Hill JR QB Dan Ellington turned in one of the most outstanding performances of the night. Ellington rushed for 149 yds on 30 carries while going 17-31 for 279 yds and 3 TD's through the air. JR WR Kaleb Johnson was the primary target, catching 8 balls for 183 yds and 2 TD's.

Central 33 Hernando 23

After accounting for 41 total touchdowns during his junior year, the reigning Shelby Metro Sports offensive player of the year picked up right where he left off and led the Warriors to the win. SR QB Deddrick Thomas had 4 TD's on the night (2-rushing, 2-passing) as Central jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter en route to the win.

Bartlett 34 Wooddale 32

After 59 first downs and 872 yds of total offense between the two teams, it came down to a defensive play to determine a winner. The Panthers stopped the Cardinals try for a two point conversion and came away with the win. Bartlett SR RB Jurieen Martin led the way with 236 yds rushing on 31 carries and 4 TD's. Wooddale SO QB Jerry Craine was 16-28 for 242 yds and 3 TD's 2 of those scores went to SR TE Stonie Fitzgerald who caught 6 passes for 100 yds as well.

Brighton 38 Carver 6

The Cardinals raced out to a 17-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. JR QB Austin Kelley made his first start as the signal caller and did very well. He finished 14-19 for 155 yds passing and 2 TD's while rushing for another. JR RB Zack Camp added 2 more TD's and 62 yds rushing on just 8 carries while SR WR Terriwayne White caught 7 passes for 82 yds and a score.

Southaven 38 Clarksdale 0

Shea Chism put up some pretty impressive numbers in his time at quarterback for the Chargers and SR QB Nic Kennedy wants to follow in his footsteps. Kennedy accounted for 4 touchdowns on the night (3-passing, 1-rushing) in leading Southaven to the win.

Friendship Christian 27 Harding Academy 7

The Lions came up short in the opener but things are looking good for the future. FR QB Zac Montgomery was 6-13 passing for 148 yds and a TD.

Whitehaven 27 Mitchell 14

A back and forth affair that wasn't settled until the fourth quarter behind the legs of Jordan Williams. It was the senior quarterback's first time back on the field after suffering a season ending injury in week 8 of the 2013 campaign. Williams rushed for 2 TD's to break open a 14-14 tie after three quarters. He was 6-10 passing for 115 yds and a 43 yd TD to Kerrick Jones. Mitchell SR QB Tomadreus Trezevant was 6-14 passing for 119 yds and a TD while rushing for a TD as well. Jaylon Moore caught 5 passes for 99 yds and a TD for Mitchell.

Tipton Rosemark 36 Tupelo Christian 0

AJ Hightower and Logan Stewart did it all as they combined for all five touchdowns for the Rebels in the win.  Hightower rushed for 114 yds on only 5 carries and scored twice. He was also 8-13 passing for 109 yds and 2 TD's. Stewart caught both of those TD passes for a total of 65 yds and he also intercepted a pass and returned it 39 yds for a score.
 
East 47 Southwind 20

The Mustangs raced out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and cruised to the win. JR QB Eric Banks only completed 7 passes on the night (out of 12) but they totaled 227 yds and 2 TD's JR RB Devante Turner is the real deal as he rushed for 128 yds on 25 carries and 3 TD's. JR WR Terreyo Nailor caught 2 passes for 96 yds and a score as well. Kyland Tate had 2 interceptions for the Mustangs and broke up three others. Tripp Terrell had a 79 yd kick return for a TD for the Jaguars.

Arlington 24 Kirby 6

RB Keelon Webber rushed for three touchdowns for the Tigers en route to the win. Arlington had to replace the graduated Hunter Sheffield and started freshman Tate Kolwyck who threw for 89 yds and a score in his debut. QB Michael Mason rushed for 131 yds and a TD for new Kirby head coach Jeremy Orsagh.

South Panola 62 White Station 27

The Spartans led 14-7 early in the second before the Tigers flexed their muscles before the home crowd with 28 straight points on their way to the win. JR standout Dillon Mitchell did it all for White Station.   He rushed for 108 yds on only 8 carries and a TD, caught 6 passes for 92 yds and a score and returned a punt 70 yds for a score. SR Kjay Johnson added 86 yds rushing on just 14 carries and a TD as well.  

FACS 33 Jackson Christian 0

Over 300 yds of total offense for the Crusaders as they get the season off on the right foot. QB Bobby Downing was 12-18 passing for 124 yds and 3 TD's Standout TE Drew Rutland caught a TD pass and picked off 2 passes and returned both for touchdowns although one was called back for FACS.

Craigmont 54 Douglass 0

7 different Chiefs scored in the game as Craigmont jumped out to a 28-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. RB Brandon Fields only carried the ball 7 times in the game but rushed for 152 yds and 2 TD's. QB Andrew McIntyre was 7-12 passing for 182 yds and a TD while rushing for one as well. WR  Darrious Threlkeld caught 2 passes for 123 yds and a score. Jerico Lewis rushed for 97 yds on only 11 carries for the Red Devils.

Brentwood Academy 31 MUS 14

The Owls had 329 yds of total offense on the night but turned the ball over 4 times and they could not overcome that in the loss to the Eagles. RB Colton Neel had 76 yds rushing in his first action since late last year when he suffered a season ending injury. QB Marcus Evans threw for 145 yds for the Owls and rushed for a 27 yd TD.

Saltillo 34 Desoto Central 13

Everything that could go wrong did in the opening quarter of the 2014 season for the Jaguars. Saltillo led 28-7 after one thanks to two pick sixes and they could not recover. But there were some bright spots. SO RB Deondre Jones rushed for 90 yds on only 8 carries and scored a TD. JR LB Peyton McMahon had 15 tackles and an interception while SR LB Chris Jones had 9 tackles.

Collierville 30 Bolton 18

SR QB Alex Hicks threw for 133 yds and 2 scores while K Dylan Scott had 3 field goals and 12 total points
a season ending injury to lead the Dragons to the victory. Bolton RB Braylon Porter had 96 yds on 11 carries for the Wildcats.

Lausanne 48 Fayette Ware 14

It was the Spencer Mackey show as the Lynx got the Kevin Locastro era off to a great start. Mackey accounted for 5 touchdowns on the night (3-rushing, 2 passing) to lead Lausanne to the win. Mackey rushed for 109 yds on just 7 carries and was 7-11 passing for 73 yds. Chris Witherspoon had 9 carries for 99 yds and a TD as wll for the Lynx. The defense did its part as well with 4 interceptions including Nyle Love 17 yd return for a TD. Fayette Ware QB Gregory Goforth ran for a TD and threw for a TD. RB Sammy Mitchell rushed for 80 yds on 8 carries while WR Raidarious Anderson caught 8 passes for 82 yds and a TD for the Wildcats.

Fairley 22 Hillcrest 12

In a bit of throwback to "old school" football, Fairley ran the ball well and relied on their defense to get the win. The Bulldogs "D" had 4 interceptions on the night and Juanye Stuckey rushed for 158 yds on just 20 carries while scoring 2 TD's and two 2-pt conversions. WR AreKavious Sears had 7 catches for 126 yds and a TD for the Vikings.

Senatobia 28 Lake Cormorant 19

The Gators were great in the run game on the evening but they couldn't generate any offense through the air and came up short. SR QB Bailey Walker had 20 carries for 113 yds and a TD & also threw a TD pass while JR RB Tadari Jordan had 16 carries for 116 yds and a score as Lake Cormorant rushed for 254 yds in the game.

Rossville Christian 39 West Memphis Christian 22

The Black Knights were led by SR WR Brice Fitzgerald and JR LB Kirby Patterson. Patterson had 13 tackles in the game and forced a fumble while Fitzgerald caught 7 passes for 117 yds and a TD and returned 5 kicks for 130 yds and a score.

St George's 31 Trinity Christian 29

The Gryphons lost a heartbreaker last year in the season opener and weren't going to let it happen again. They led 31-14 after three quarters and had to withstand a furious comeback as St. George's stopped Trinity Christian on a 2-pt conversion try to tie the game on the final play to secure the victory. The Gryphons had almost 350 yds of total offense but the defense came up big as both Clay Crenshaw and Chase Hayden intercepted passes and returned them for touchdowns. Hayden had 120 yds rushing on 18 carries and Crenshaw rushed for 71 yds on only 6 carries. QB Ben Glass threw for 96 yds and 2 TD's while rushing for 58 yds and WR Corey Jones caught 5 passes for 70 yds and a TD.

Houston 26 Cordova 19

The Mustangs trailed 16-7 after one but rallied for the win. RB Chase Moss-Pioreck rushed for 108 yds on 22 carries and scored twice and K Jacob Painter had 2 field goals to lead the Mustangs. For the Wolves, Martavious Crockett picked off a pass & returned it 65 yds for a TD & K Jose Hernandez had a 45 yd FG.

Manassas 47 Raleigh Egypt 7

James Smith. Remember the name. He put on a performance in his opening game that won't be forgotten. Smith threw for 5 TD's in the game and ran for another as Manassas had almost 450 yds of total offense in the game. Smith was 11-17 for 273 yds with touchdowns of 18,31,35,35 and 40 yds. Antonio Turner had 5 catches for 158 yds and 2 TD's while LadarriusYancey caught a TD pass and rushed for another. Ladarrioun Seymour rushed for 109 yds on just 13 carries for the Tigers as well. QB DaVonte Boyland had 123 yds of total offense for the Pharoahs and their only touchdown.

St Benedict 29 Kingsbury 0

It was the Mark Kovacs show as the Eagles got the season started on the right foot. Kovacs was 10-19 for 152 yds and 4 touchdowns. Tyler Currie caught 3 of those touchdown passes and had had 6 total catches for 91 yds. Joey Magnifico caught 2 passes for 50 yds and a score and rushed for 59 yds on only 6 carries. The St Benedict "D" was up to the task as well holding the Falcons to 86 total yards.

Melrose 62 MAHS 0

Another player with an outstanding performance was Melrose QB Cedrick Crawford. Crawford was 9-12 passing for 261 yds and 4 TD's (32,38,52,88) and rushed for a TD as well. Standout WR Jonathan Johnson got things started with a bang as he returned the opening kickoff 96 yds for a score and then caught an 88 yd TD pass from Crawford. Johnson finished with 3 catches for 139 yds and 2 TD receptions. Ke'Von Hall rushed for 64 yds on just 3 carries and scored twice. DeQuan Dallas had 5 catches for 69 yds and a score while Tony Pollard caught 3 passes for 88 yds and a TD. The Golden Wildcat "D" got in on the action as well with Kendrick Jones picked off a pass and returning it 26 yds for a score while holding MAHS to 91 yds of total offense.

Magnolia Heights 39 Northpoint Christian 14

The Trojans just could not get the Magnolia Heights offense off the field. Time of possession was 33:30 to 14:30 in favor of Magnolia Heights. On the positive side, there were some underclassmen that stepped up on defense that should bode well down the line. JR Tyree Bryant led with 9 tackles, FR Nathan Tatko (6'1 215 LB) 8 tackles, FR Myles McCaskill 7 tackles and SR Brennan Walker had 7 tackles.
