Players of the Year & Tommy Harrison Coach of the Year
We have concluded our season of radio shows with the unveiling of our Offensive & Defensive Players of the Year, an All Around Player of the Year and our Tommy Harrison Coach of the Year. There were a lot and I do mean a LOT of worthy candidates but in the end, there can be only one winner in each category.
Some background information on the gentleman who our Coach of the Year award is named after. Tommy Harrison was a coach in the Shelby Metro area for 49 years. The first 36 were in public schools and the final 13 were over at MUS. Harrison started the high school scoreboard radio show back in the late 90's and continued it up until his death 4 years ago. We can't think of a more deserving person and coach to name our award after.
Our Tommy Harrison Coach of the Year winner is Eddie Woods of Melrose. The Golden Wildcats started the year with a 16 game losing streak (lost last 6 games of 2011 & were 0-10 in 2012). With basically the same team, Woods led Melrose to a record of 8-4 and into the second round of the state playoffs.
Our Offensive Player of the Year is Central's JR QB Deddrick Thomas. Thomas was not the quarterback when the year started but stepped into the role and an unstoppable force. Deddrick carried 151 times for 1,720 yds (11.4/carry) with 28 TD's. He threw for 732 yds & 12 TD's. He caught 1 pass for 63 yds and a TD & had 630 return yds. All in all, Thomas had 3,145 all purpose yds and 41 TD's.
Our Defensive Player of the Year is Whitehaven JR LB Joshua McMillon. McMillon finished the year with 88 tackles, 25-TFL, 14 sacks, 4 FF, 1 FR, 2 INT & 5 breakups.
Our All Around Player of the Year is Southwind SR WR Jimmy Keys. Keys caught 47 passes for 778 yds (15.3) and 14 TD's. He had 10 interceptions for 207 yds & returned 2 of those for TD's. Keys returned 2 punts for TD's while averaging 25 yds/return & returned 4 kickoffs for TD's while averaging 42 yds/return.
