Playoff preview for Tennessee area teams

1A

BTW at Lake Co

This is the first ever playoff meeting between the two teams and this is the first time for the Warriors in the playoffs since 2016. Their overall playoff record is 1-13 with that 1 win coming vs Peabody back in 2011.

It's hard to believe that the Falcons aren't the #1 team in 1A. They have scored in the 50's four times, in the 60's twice and even scored 72 against a 3A team. This is the third straight year in the playoffs for a Lake Co team with a rich tradition of postseason play. They knocked off Westwood last year in the opening round en route to the semifinals before losing to Cornersville and are 46-33 all time with 7 state final appearances and 2 titles.

The winner of this game will play the winner of the MASE-Greenfield game.

West Carroll has been up and down this year. They got off to a 4-1 start before losing 3 in a row and currently have a two game winning streak heading into the playoffs. Five times this year MASE has scored 36 pts or more. They are going to have to score to keep up with Greenfield who have 3 games in the 40's this year and 1 game of 50. They do come into the playoffs on a two game losing streak. This is the 3rd straight year in the playoffs for the Yellowjackets who have an overall playoff record of 4-10.

These two teams are very familiar with each other in the post season. This will be the 3rd time in the last 5 years the two have met. In 2015, Dresden won 64-6 and in 2017, Dresden won 53-16. The Bulldogs offense gets a lot of publicity and rightfully so as they have put up 60 pts 3 times this year but don't forget about the defense. They have given up 12 pts or less 7 times this including 4 shutouts. Middle College is still looking for its first ever playoff win as they are 0-3.

Dresden got off to a rough start this year at 1-5 but finished up strong winning 3 of the last 4 games. The Lions have plenty of post season success as they have been in the playoffs 9 of the last 10 years but missed last year. Their overall playoff record is 20-20 including a state title back in 2016.

The winner of this game will play the winner of the East-West Carroll game.

2A

MAHS at Peabody

This is a rematch from last year's opening round game that was won by Peabody 42-0. MAHS will have to step it up on the defensive side of the ball but they have been up to the challenge all year. The most points allowed in any one game was 28 vs Fairley in the regular season finale. They allowed 14 pts or fewer in 7 of the 10 games on the schedule. The Lions overall playoff record is 2-4 with wins in both 2015 & 2016.

There is a good reason that Peabody is currently the #1 team in the state in 2A. Not only are they the defending state champs, they have it all on both sides of the ball. Defensively, they haven't given up more than 14 pts in any one game this season and have only given up 1 touchdown or less in 8 of the 10 games. Offensively, the lowest point total on the year is 30.Peabody has also scored in the 40's 4 times, in the 50's twice and in the 60's once. The Golden Tide have a very successful program as this is the 10th straight year in the post season that includes state titles in 2014 & 2018. Their overall playoff record is 32-21

The winner of this game will play the winner of the Mitchell-McKenzie game.

They say that the third time's a charm. Let's hope so for the Red Devils as this will be the third straight year they have faced Union City in the playoffs.  Union City won last year 49-13 & in 2017, 44-20.  The Red Devils got off to a tough start as they had a 1-4 start before finishing the regular season with a five game winning streak. Douglass has only allowed 41 total points during this streak. Their overall playoff record is 4-8 with their last win coming back in 2017.

It's been a roller coaster year for Union City. They lost their opener, won the next three games, lost the next three and finished up the regular season with a three game winning streak. They are averaging over 43 pts/gm in their 6 wins. The Golden Tornadoes are one of the most successful teams in Tennessee history. They have made the postseason for the last 15 years in a row, playing in 7 state finals and winning 4 state championships in 2009, 2013, 2014 & 2017. Their overall playoff record is 51-23.

Their overall playoff record is 10-24.

Adamsville had their fans rubbing their eyes after losing the first five games of the season and then immediately going on a four game winning streak before losing the regular season finale last week. The Cardinals missed the postseason last year but are no stranger to the playoffs as they played in the previous 9 years, losing in the state title game in 2012 & 2013. Their overall playoff record is 20-18. The last postseason win for the Cardinals came in that game back in 2017 vs Fairley.

They have been in the postseason for 36 of the last 37 years dating back to 1983. They have played in 9 state finals and won 4 titles and their overall playoff record is 85-37.
