Game recaps from September 27-28

Whitehaven 47 Ridgeway 40

We have another candidate for game of the year. This was a back and forth affair that featured almost 1,000 yds of total offense between the two teams (Whitehaven-564, Ridgeway-412). Whitehaven trailed 27-13 at the half and 34-19 with 2 minutes left in the third quarter before mounting the comeback with 28 points over the final 14 minutes of action. The Tigers have largely relied on the 1-2 punch of senior RB's Ramadi Warren & Marshawn Jones but it was a couple of juniors that had their own coming out party. QB Jordan Williams had an unbelievable night, finishing 15-22 for 322 yds and 5 TD's while rushing for 104 yds on 11 carries and 2 more touchdowns, giving him all 7 scores on the night. After Ridgeway had retaken the lead at 40-39, Williams hit Warren with a 62 yd TD pass to give the Tigers the win. WR Braylen Rochell caught 5 passes for 108 yds and 3 TD's.If Whitehaven's offense is clicking like this, they will be awfully hard to beat. Ridgeway's Earl Harrison was very impressive as well. The junior had 26 carries for 209 yds and 2 TD's. JR QB Braxton Conard was 10-26 for 112 yds and a TD while rushing for a TD as well. Recaps of games from September 19,20 and 21

MUS 26 South Panola 9

Not too many people gave the Owls a chance in this one. South Panola came into the game as the #1 team in the state of Mississippi. They led in just about every statistical category in the game but MUS kept the Tigers off the scoreboard when it mattered most and got the upset win. The defense and special teams came up big time and time again on this wet, rainy night. South Panola was 1 of 15 on third down conversions and the Owls were led by a trio of players with double digit tackles. SR LB Michael Fitzsimmons had 17, SR DL Malik Smith had 12 and SO LB Tim Hart had 11. SR K/P Gary Wunderlich kicked a 51 yd FG while averaging almost 50 yds a punt.  JR RB Colton Neel had 2 TD's to lead the offense.

Recaps from September 12-13 (updated)

Melrose 42 Kirby 20

The Golden Wildcats only led 22-20 at the half before breaking the game open down the stretch to continue their remarkable turnaround from last year. Melrose started the season with a 16 game losing streak and they are trying to get the program back to where it used to be. A 4-0 start in 2013 has the team headed in the right direction. Both sides of the ball were getting it done Friday night vs the Cougars. The Golden Wildcats defense held Kirby to 3 first downs and 87 yds of total offense for the game and JR KeVon Hall picked off a pass and returned it 36 yds for a TD. Melrose had almost 500 yds of total offense and they were led by their standout trio, SR QB LeEarl Patterson, SR ATH Cornelius Sturghill and JR ATH Johnathan Johnson. Patterson finished the night 19-34 for 358 yds and 4 TD passes. Sturghill caught 7 of those passes for 122 yds and 2 TD's while Johnson caught 6 passes for 142 yds and a TD. Johnson also had 76 yds rushing on 5 carries and a TD.

Updated standings as of September 16

Recaps from September 5-6

Southaven 45 CBHS 42

This is the early candidate for game of the year. A back and forth affair that wasn't settled until the final snap of the game. JR Ryan Robbins was the hero for the second straight week for the Chargers as his 37 yd FG gave Southaven the win. Robbins had kicked a FG with 8 seconds left last week in the 17-14 win over Trezevant. CBHS couldn't stop the Southaven passing attack and the Chargers couldn't stop the Purple Wave ground game. Charger SR QB Shea Chism was 30-46 for 401 yds and 5 TD's. His favorite targets on the night were JR WR's Terry Williams and Terrence Davis. Williams caught 11 passes on the night for 173 yds. Davis caught 6 passes for 149 yds and 4 TD's. Purple Wave SR QB Breck Ruddick led a ground game that rushed for 355 yds. Ruddick had 18 carries for 181 yds and 2 TD's and threw for a TD as well. SR RB Connor Harris had 22 carries for 146 yds and 2 TD's.
